Are you sure those are active cases? I’m pretty sure that’s just the number of people that have tested positive since it started, recoveries are not well-reported outside of people being released from the hospital. NY DOH called me before the doctor did when i tested positive but they didn’t track anything past that.

Meanwhile with our "ambassadors" to Spain:

Baffled Brit Boozers on Spain’s Costa del Sol haven’t an idea where to get a pint from on Monday in Fuengirola

Alan and Sue in their normal pose-they wanted to know where to get a pint from on Monday

Alan said: “We have saved up a lot of money for Monday, it’s going to be a cracker, I think we will start off in Carvajal and do a pub crawl to the bottom of the town, by the castle.”

Partner Sue chipped in: “The plan is to stop for a good old full-English followed by a pint of anything, I don’t mind as long as it’s cold and wet, it’s been so long I don’t care!”

Yeah, quoted the wrong number. But the point is that right now with the opening, there are a lot more cases than when it started, so the possibility of getting infected is orders of magnitude greater.

THE DARK SIDE OF SCIENCE BREEDS A WEAPON OF WAR

Buglord
The purpose of the now-diminishing stay-at-home was not to prevent people from getting Covid. It was to slow the infection rate to a level that hospitals could manage treatment.

From a pure public health standpoint, the hypothetical “best” scenario would be for a strict-shelter-in-place order to remain in effect until a vaccine is administered. This isn’t to prevent the disease from spreading, but to slow it. And it was necessary to slow it to prevent the overwhelming of hospital capacity. It’s only meant to protect lives in as much as preventing excess deaths due to lack of medical care.

The path forward over the coming months will be this weird loosening/tightening restrictions if/when hospitals get near capacity. I predict that on average, death rates will plateau and hold steady for ~4 months. The trouble is that tightening restrictions back up will be less effective over time, so I anticipate some big fluctuations as we go back to a reactive stance to this (due to the delay effects).

I see this as a race to 60% total infection or a prophylactic, whichever comes first.

The only way I see myself changing my outlook is if there was a rigorous nationwide testing/tracing program implemented, but c’mon.

Despite politicians here telling the public to be sensible so that governments don't have to bring back the restrictions which have just been lifted, I doubt those restrictions will be reintroduced even if covid-19 cases to start to climb again. We've massively increased our intensive care capacity over the last few months and our government is resistant to the idea of increasing the deficit any further to provide income support beyond September.

yeah it's a dumb assumption to make, but at the same time cancelling rents and mortgages and providing universal income and free healthcare as well as other forms of economic aid and debt elimination would help people in the long run a lot more than reopening and sending everyone back to work and then crashing the healthcare system with a second wave.

of course the average person who is out of work, suffering and angry about it is not making a pro-trump political statement simply by feeling that way or being in that situation, but the people funding the whole movement to reopen (as opposed to the other methods of supporting people who are out of work and broke) and funding these protests are certainly trump supporters and rightwing think tanks, and the fact that the protests are full of maga hats and rightwing militia types is not exactly a coincidence

not yet it isn't, but it's far closer than it has ever been at any point in my lifetime. there are, at least, moratoriums on eviction in some places which is a step in the right direction. a presidential candidate has publically endorsed the idea of rent and mortgage forgiveness which, again, doesn't mean it's realistically "on the table" (biden would have to win and then keep his word, both currently unlikely) but it's a sign that we are far closer than we have been before and that it could be put on the table through continued pressure. i also think it may happen on a local level in some areas even if not on state/federal levels

Oh well then I agree, rent and mortgage forgiveness as well as universal healthcare and such would of course be better than flooding hospitals. But that's the opposite of FYGM, and thus not ever going to happen. It'd be nice though.

From the Netherlands, as my cable company presents it in its racing channels. I have been following these races for the last three years. The racing has its exiting moments, but it also offers a view on a truly conservative America with a Southern touch?

Military parade, Christian prayer, ecstatic national anthem, driver with family looking pious with hand on the heart, it is all quite pathetic - but not necessarily malicious - from where I stand.

So I was kind of surprised that they are very careful about Covid19, everybody wears masks, only a bare minimum of staff, and huge fines for violations. Against all the horror stories on this forum, I was positively surprised by American behaviour.

i think thats a moot point because biden is unlikely to be elected.

but my point is that the idea even being entertained or discussed by a mainstream presidential candidate is something that would have been unthinkable 10 or 20 years ago so its silly to write it off as impossible.

we're not talking about something actually impossible here in a physical sense, we're talking about something that is only politically impossible, which was also once said about things like marriage equality and many other civil rights, things that maybe were "impossible" at some point but then happened because people made them happen. i certainly dont expect to see universal healthcare or nationwide rent/mortgage forgiveness in november but i wouldnt at all be surprised if it happened on a municipal level in some places depending on if lockdowns strengthen or return
