You could pop into that thread and ask and you'll get plenty of info about why German military tech in WW2 is definitely overhyped. I read Wages of Destruction last year, iirc a lot of German industry was still small workshop in the 30's. So you had that inefficiency in top of design choices as well. Uniforms that looked snappy in parades but performed poorly. Helmets that had like 30 separate manufacturing steps. Etc. brugroffil has issued a correction as of 23:34 on May 17, 2020 |

I feel bad because when i see that kind of stuff I think of it more about subservient positions of people, rather than homophobic. A really fascinating thing about Nazi Germany is people will still say "well, maybe they were bad during the war, but before the war everything was great!", even people who actually have a grasp of how bad they were. Why this is really dumb, is that Germany's pre war prosparity was a classic paper tiger. It was built entirely on borrowing, and the promises of plunder from the rest of Europe. If they didn't loot France and the rest, they wouldn't of been able to pay their debts. When you actually study, not just look at their crazy beliefs, but really get into how the nazi state functioned, you see how badly it was organized. Everyone was always fighting against each other for resources, and Hitler himself controlled most of them. If you could capture his imagination or attention with a cool giant tank or a fast jet, you could get all the funding you wanted. Thats why money was put towards things like the King Tiger, which wasn't really needed because Panzer IVs and Vs could have done everything they needed. But it is hilarious how long they took to figure out sloped armor. But their success was more in training and tactics. French tanks were superior to most of tanks they were coming up against, a Char 2 could obliterate a p2 easily, but the Germans knew how to use their tanks, put them all together and use them as breakthrough units that cause havoc behind the line. Though that only works early on because everyone knows what you're going to do next.

Saudi Arabia famously has two air forces (the Saudi National Air Force and the Royal Saudi Air Force) and for a very similar reason - if the officers in one organization decide to launch a coup, the other air force can shoot them down. A successful coup means subverting both organizations, which is tough (it's hard enough to subvert a single military branch) and made tougher by the fact that the Saudi royal family sets the SNAF and RSAF at odds whenever they can (not much trust or love lost between the two). Saddam's Iraq had a bunch of competing power centers, again by design. It's a pattern you see all over the place when you start looking for it. It's a lot of things, but it sure ain't efficient - and it's a great counterpoint to harebrained arguments about how dictatorships are efficient and get things done.
