Why do they all do the "I have been very clear..." thing before a non-answer? I'm assuming some prick with ridiculous glasses frames at some point has written a book about it and how it's some amazing neurolinguistic programming trick to stop people questioning you.

Interesting read: press criticism of the government during WW2: seems they weren't as uncritical as those demanding we all go out and get ourselves infected in the name of the economy seem to think. questia.com/library/journal/1P3-10996290/press-freedom-in-britain-during-world-war-ii quote:

These strikes are wrong at a time when negotiations are still going on, but parents and the public have been let down by both sides because the Government has acted in a reckless and provocative manner...

https://twitter.com/LordAshcroft/status/1262085956359852032?s=20 Further to: XMNN posted:cuuuunt "Your Country Needs You" was from a different war and was actually changed halfway through because it wasn't clear or impactful enough (I can't remember whether 'Needs You' was the first or altered version, though). There were widespread information campaigns detailing exactly what the sirens meant and what you were meant to do in response to them, not to mention literal armies of ARP Wardens to make sure people stuck to the rules. Vegetarians and others with special dietary requirements or beliefs had specialised ration books accounting for their needs. There was continual criticism and questioning of the government and military's response to air raids and their prevention [this applies to pretty much everything in WW2 - people moaned and criticised almost everything, to anyone they could, at almost any and every level]. Six years of being required to wear dull military uniforms (especially caps and hats) had a huge pushback as soon as materials and income became available post-war. The decline in hat-wearing in public was investigated by hat-makers in the 1940s/50s and the most consistent response was "I spent six years being bawled at to wear a hat properly so I'm damned if I'll choose to wear one now without good reason." The shortage of Spitfires in 1940 was a significant scandal, was subject to numerous investigations and ended up with the big Spitfire plant at Castle Bromwich being taken over by the government, having its horrendous labour problems sorted out and then a hand-picked management team installed. Aside from the comments on that page, the construction also does speak directly to how politicians learn public speaking, specifically how to present an agreed message with its intended agreed focus - usually meaning multiple things to multiple audiences - and not being baited into highlighting potentially different interpretations, or be baited into publicly agreeing (or denying) that the message could be rephrased equivalently in a much more hostile way. Namely: doggedly returning to "Our position is X" over and over again. The rest is just patter... We believe that X. We are clear that X. We have always been clear that X. As we have said before, X. Journo: do you mean that Y? Our position is X. Wouldn't you agree that X is the same as Y? I have been very clear that X.

|
# ? May 18, 2020 18:13 |

As someone noted here the last time it came up, the Scottish Government's power to actually diverge from what Westminster wants is very limited, so they do a lot of presenting what they're being forced to do as considered decisions.

Cerv posted:do what exactly? the tweet's already deleted. what's he going to get out of suing? a very small payout. it's not like Dorries can get chucked in jail or forced out of parliament over it. I get what you're saying, and granted it's entirely possible a sensible political analysis was made and decided it's not worth the bother, but I feel like getting it on record as a matter of law that Dorries committed libel would be both morally good and have at least some potential to be politically effective. (But we're getting into Gay Black Labour territory by imagining that not only is the case pursued but effective hay is made out of it, so maybe Sir Keir just decided not to bother in the first place lest he fall at a later hurdle) This is what the 1970s thought today would look like. sebzilla posted:I'm gonna be pretty annoyed if Johnson actually manages to gently caress this up hard enough to let bland centrism be an appealing alternative. It's galling as all gently caress, aye. But I'll still take bland Starmerism (NOT Stürmerism do NOT get them confused!!) over the current Hell Tories for sure. I'm going to spend the rest of my days mourning 2019 though, Corbyn would have handled this crisis so much more sensibly and competently it's hard to even comprehend.
