He's pretty much the premiere Indigenous Canadian painter, and arguably the premiere Canadian painter as well, though I suspect he'd eschew the title. His work almost always deals with reversals of classic Canadian power dynamics, usually while charging those reversals sexually. He also employs a drag alter-ego named Miss Chief Eagle Testicle, he usually appears publicly as her, as well as including her in his paintings. He paints using the trappings of the "historical genre painting", which he utilizes to highlight the inherent political and power dynamics found in earnest historically examples of this style, which are often lauded as apolitical realist paintings representative of a less divisive era. He also uses that style, I suspect, because it's fairly easy to reproduce, most painters worth their salt can do it, and he makes use of numerous assistants that actually paint the pieces themselves. He plans out the paintings, and then passes them off to an assistant to make. It allows him to makes thousands of paintings, while normally one could make maybe a hundred a year tops in that style. It's a fairly common practice in the arts, I myself once worked in such a studio, but it's not without controversy. As he doesn't actually make the work in the truest sense, but does get all the credit. I would say Monkman the opposite of McNaughton, as he uses the historical style to point to the way we remember the past though art, and the way we depoliticize old art. Meanwhile McNaughton is a hack that cannot even paint a circle or get proportions right, but uses the historical genre style to appeal to reactionaries that wish to return to a time when the white man was unquestionably held as superior to all. That was fun, currently laid off my museum/art gallery job and working in a grocery store. Nice to use my degree a little.
