A man called Dominic Cummings tried to kill his parents and it is the biggest story in British media for 5 days in a row. Because nothing else is happening.

That Facebook post is exactly why starmer et al will attack on Cummings and not the general handling of the crisis - idiots will say "you wouldn't have done any better" but Cummings breaking the rule is something they can process .

However, it remains to be seen if this will even stick to domm Cumm, let alone Boris, the Tories or our failing system in general.

I was wondering this myself. The Tories have demonstrated their counter against allegations they're mishandling the pandemic - "we're following the science", "we have to keep the economy open", "kids need education" etc. It's not been terribly successful (see their approval ratings) but it's working somewhat. As long as people see the lockdown as an issue of competing interests (economy vs. health, freedom vs. safety etc.) they won't believe Labour when they say the Tories are objectively Doing It Wrong. This will probably change if we get a big second wave and other countries don't.

The Cummings stuff on the other hand is easy to understand, and plays right into the idea most people have that Tories are elitist. Which is especially bad for Johnson's "man of the people" act. And a real emotional issue for lots of people who have sacrificed during the lockdown.

Oh, and a whole new front opened up today when Cummies broke out the ludicrous story of him "testing his eyesight". Now it looks like the government is taking the public for fools. Which is something hopefully Labour will point out loudly and repeatedly, since just telling the story and forcing Tories to say they believe it looks so bad for them it's unreal.

Don't understand the problem there tbh, if I believed my eyesight was rapidly failing, I would absolutely pack my spouse and child into the car and go for a drive?

“I wasn’t sure if I could legally drive so I decided to give it a go to check” really does open up a lot of opportunities, doesn’t it.

“Officer, I wasn’t sure if I was too drunk to drive after five pints so I thought I should check.”

My God, it's full of Horatios!

It’s about power isn’t it? Like always, Boris and DC decided to just do stuff and ignore criticism and challenge critics to actually do anything about it.

If there’s one thing that has been proved beyond a shadow of a doubt since 2016 it’s that there are no intrinsic consequences to lying or being a oval office in public, only to pissing off someone(s) that have the power to take revenge somehow, a group that doesn’t include the political centre or established media.

Or threatening established power structures, that’ll do it.

Yeah, it's Trump-style brazen disregard for propriety and it works even better in the Uk, 'cos it turns out most of our checks and balances are just old traditions and gentlemen's agreements rather than anything actually written into law.

It's quite frustrating there aren't any polls at the moment, because I think a couple of horrendous polls might actually make some Tories worried enough to kick off.

Being a little more balanced: a senior advisor who created the "how not to murder your relatives and neighbours" guide has just broken every rule he himself wrote and said they don't apply to him. And we're at the point where it's becoming impossible to maintain fever pitch over Covid-19 - it's either going to become the new norm or people will become blasé about it.

it's this. There are people out there looking at the lying, the laziness, the arrogance, the ineptitude, the casual indifference to human suffering, the hypocrisy, the rising death toll and with a proud tear in their eye saying "at least we're not under Corbyn's socialism".

There's also another 4.5 years until the next election so polls are worth less than nothing at this point. Literally no one will remember this by then.

I think this is accurate.

I also don't think this week's stories will figure into people's impressions of the government's response to any significant degree.

Four and a half years is a very long time and this will be nothing more than a distant memory at that point. But it could well be important in kicking off a general narrative of Tory sleaze and corruption that rolls on for years.

Personally though I am very sceptical of the idea that Boris Johnson will still be Prime Minister by the time of the next election.

I think it, along with other things, will help solidify the image of the government as feckless idiots in the eyes of some people, and make others question.

The persistent observation that no one thing is going to immediately solve the problem is not, I think, a helpful one. Because you can say that about literally everything. Major changes don't happen because of single events, they happen as part of countless small things piling up.

Its been simmering for a while, but the backlash/astroturf against the 'MSM' is an interesting one. I'm seeing it a bit on social media, WhatsApp groups and sort of lefty covid conspiracy nuts, as well as the usual gammons.

The narrative seems to begin with Brexit with people believing the media are part of a misinformation campaign to control them - though I'm not sure what else they believe really. In a way I can understand English nationalism better as I grew up surrounded by racist scumbags, but I don't understand the anti-media lot - what do they stand for?

These are similar people who bang on about freedom of speech and common sense, and generally attach themselves to authority - particularly if the authority is being challenged in some way. They'll defend the army or police or Boris or Cummings til the cows come home, and anybody who stops them from doing their jobs properly (the left/the media/any minority) is an abomination against the way things should be. But what's the end goal? The problem with people like Katie Hopkins or Paul Watson is they like to stir the pot but they have no real ideology beyond making money from it.

Curious times.

Yeah, I'm pretty glad he's keeping his nose out, to be honest. It's not like they need help holding themselves to account about this one, and getting in on it means you're turning media attention away from it onto yourself.

I'm honestly pretty glad there's no PMQs this week for the same reason. I don't think he (or anyone) could do a good enough job in the PMQs format at making this look worse than a week of media attention.

Tempted to agree in this case. As soon as he says something then the press can start to focus on him “why is kier doing this at this sensitive time” or whatever. This way labour are complete out of the headline.

The end goal is to deligitimise any source of knowledge and make facts and expertise things that cannot ever be trusted, so that ideologues are more able to hold sway.

People may not be dealing with their distrust of the media in a particularly intelligent or graceful way but that's par for the course. The media has destroyed its reputation and it is inevitable that people would stop trusting it, even if they don't have a complete understanding of why they feel that way.

:yeshaha:

also I thought I was making some progress with unfucking my work by getting them to agree to limit capacity in the lab, force people to work in different zones etc. but I forgot how completely loving braindead everyone at my company is

- one other person in the lab was supposed to go in and do lab work but has hurt her foot so she can't wear closed toe shoes, so can't work in the lab, but has decided to go in anyway to work from the office instead of working from home (even though there's nothing that can be done there that can't be done at home)
- other person in the lab said "lovely stuff you can be on brew duty ;)" so they're definitely all handling each others mugs in the office still
- the other person in the lab and his boss are still going to customer sites regularly and are apparently all up in each others faces when they're setting up systems in the lab (believable, they're both gently caress wits)
- said boss is loving old and had a pneumonia scare a couple of years ago. tbh idgaf about his personal safety as he's an arsehole, but his dad was literally one of the first people to die from coronavirus so you'd have thought he would be taking it a bit more seriously
- another old guy who's a law unto himself is "just popping in" later, to work in the smaller lab where I'm probably going to end up having to do work tomorrow

open 'er up, we can trust the common sense of the British public and the effectively completely optional workplace safety guidance will definitely be adhered to rigourously

e: they whatsapped me yesterday to see if I could go in instead, but what do you know I completely forgot to read the messages until this morning, silly me!
