And I know this is literally a repurposed factory, but I feel like they could have done more to make it not look like a repurposed factory. That concrete and metal has to be echoey as gently caress, so lovely for conversation, listening to music, or playing an instrument. But I guess it's a good thing it's concrete, so you don't ruin the floor when you bring that fat bike in from riding in the Minneapolis winter slush. Also lol at all those glass photo frames on the wall basically within the path of the bike as it hoists up and down.

Extra lol is that the bedrooms don't even have doors, or walls that go all the way to the roof. Hope you're OK with even the tiniest noises you make in bed echoing throughout the entire apartment.

How do you even use a stove that size to anywhere close to it's capacity with such little counter space? Oh right, I forgot that's a display kitchen, not a functional one.

I like the humble little mid-century ranch that was probably the original house on the property but has now been turned into a "guest house" for the behemoth mansion. I bet the original family who lived in that house was the same size as the one inhabiting the megamansion.

probably bunch up. I had a lovely wood floor in an older place and I put a bath mat under my chair. The wheels kept getting caught on on the corners and I couldn't roll for poo poo

dunno how it works for that chair, but HM makes some hardwood-specific casters, could probably find some for other chairs (or fit them?)

that being said, skate casters will probably look less bad than a pad

e: I have these stools with the little backs because I found I didn't care about having a full back since im not leaning at the bar anyway, but ymmv. I found when I couldn't touch the floor, I didn't push myself back into the seat to need a full back

It'll need to be relatively heavy and low pile, and even then the chair might just slide it across the floor. What about a decorative vinyl mat? It'll look nicer than the clear one you have now, while still staying in place.

I sorta feel like enormous entertainment centers are basically impossible to make stylish unless it’s a dedicated theater room/man cave which are pretty heinous by definition. Putting a huge tv (or even a small tv) in your living room is always a compromise

knox_harrington

Running no point.

Yeah orienting the entire room around the TV inevitably compromises how it looks, and blocking the window with the TV is even worse. Unfortunately our protagonist is set on interior design self-harm, so a harm réduction strategy is maybe appropriate in this case.

It's a regular sized tv, a receiver, and a pair of bookshelf speakers. In what universe is that an "enormous entertainment center"?

Do you people just not have TVs?

It’s the focal point of that room which is fine if watching tv is your hobby and that’s how you want to use that space, but it doesn’t make it a super attractive space from an interior design perspective. The new tv console with the speakers on top is much better than the old one with the speakers on stools. Having (some of) the cat toys out of frame helps too.

There's also the comedy option of taking blocking the window to its logical conclusion and putting up some kind of, like, painting triptych that covers literally the entire wall.

Apologies if I missed earlier discussion on centering the thing, but you could easily condense the TV/stand over to the left and have the window be a window (just need a shade you can easily adjust to avoid glare). A plant or two in the corner next to the fireplace would open it up a lot and reduce the enormous entertainment center vibe

NO

It is a requirement that Josh can recline on his plastic sofa precisely perpendicular to the TV, which must also be in the centre of the room. The PlayStation must, naturally, be directly underneath the television and may not be enclosed because it may cause 1ns additional latency.

agreed, especially on the plants. plants will make your space look more likely and much less dank. unless they are very dank plants, in which case, you can smoke then and invite your friends over to smoke them.

get plants! pothos and monsteras are hardy, and p easy to take care of, and are good at livening it up.

A real Portlander now
Trying to figure out a way to configure our future furniture in this room. Moving with a 3 seater sofa, dining table and chairs, a modular freestanding unit and a buffet/console/sideboard and 3 bikes. We also have to fit a desk in this room since my partner is starting an accelerated nursing program and don't want to have long study nights keeping me up in the bedroom. This picture is from the kitchen and the second is from in front of the console. The entrance door is to the right of this view and continues into the bathroom. Think of it as a 4x4 box. These are from the former tenant.

I was thinking of flipping everything so that the TV and console and wall unit will be on the other side of the wall vs the previous tenants setup, moving the sofa up to just shy of the window, which will be enough space for the desk and wall mounts for the bikes. I'm probably going to let the dining set go and get a desk to fit in the bedroom if my WFH situation extends longer than Labor Day.

Our kitchen is a non-starter with eating in it. Best we will get a 4-5 seater round table that folds down to two. We like to have game nights and dinner parties with friends when it's not a pandemic

For the bedroom I think we're stuck with this layout as well. Prev tenant had a dresser on the opposite wall, which is where I would put future desk.

Welcome to Manhattan apartments. This place is considered large and we're VERY lucky to have 3 closets and a trunk storage. Also planning to be here for 2 years minimum. The desk will be not needed in a year so that will free up some space. Our life priorities for our space are school and WFH support, gaming computer and tabletop/entertaining with friends, and bike storage for bike commuting and getting exercise and seeing the city. I'll probably be commuting to work in the fall and he has commuting to school.
