Lambert posted:Your dumb gun toy was a waste of money and the US being chock full of guns didn't stop the rise of fascism. If anything, it greatly enabled it by causing police to militarize to an extreme degree. people owning guns didn't cause the militarization of police, racism and white supremacy did. SWAT teams didn't even exist until the 1960's, and in particular the Watts riots catalyzed their proliferation and use as an urban anti-riot tool. then in the 80's congress and Reagan started authorizing the militarization of police to better handle the war on drugs. since the late 90's you could say that events like Columbine caused training to change to emphasize an "us vs them" attitude among police, but that attitude was already there, but now the police were trained that white people should be presumed dangerous too. even so, the militarization was already on its way with weapon and material transfer from the military to the police and the war on terror, another nebulous war rooted in racism, accelerated this.

Every successful movement has brought with it the means to defend itself from the violence of its opponents. While both certainly believed that nonviolent protests can work, they also understood that violence is sometimes necessary to achieve their goals. There are plenty of Gandhi quotes where he absolutely advocates violence like this: quote:I have been repeating over and over again that he who cannot protect himself or his nearest and dearest or their honour by non-violently facing death may and ought to do so by violently dealing with the oppressor. He who can do neither of the two is a burden.

TMMadman posted:While both certainly believed that nonviolent protests can work, they also understood that violence is sometimes necessary to achieve their goals. The Indian Independence movement was already 80 years old by the time Ghandi joined it. He saw that armed resistance hadn't worked so far and tried a different tactic, that's it. It still didn't work, but he did wrangle some concessions from the British regarding workers rights. The only thing that broke British control of India was the USA telling them to get the gently caress out of India after 1946 because we wanted access to Indian resources and markets directly.

Homemade won't cut it Im not a virologist, but yea, everyone in my circle goes with cloth masks are good if everyone wears one, but if not then pull out the n95s. for us in construction the peer pressure is pretty good, because we all HATE having to work in an n95 so it makes it easy to yell at everyone to mask up so we dont have to resort to them.
