Admiral Ray posted:that's not manufactured consent that's a problem of human psychology. we tend to normalize and ignore things if they don't change fast enough because our brains are on the look out for change first and foremost. HyperNormalisation is a 2016 BBC documentary by British filmmaker Adam Curtis. It argues that governments, financiers, and technological utopians have, since the 1970s, given up on the complex "real world" and built a simpler "fake world" run by corporations and kept stable by politicians. [1] quote:Yurchak coined the term "hypernormalization" in his 2005 book Everything was Forever, Until it was No More: The Last Soviet Generation. The book focused on the political, social and cultural conditions during what he terms "late socialism" (the period after Stalin but before Perestroika, mid-1950s - mid-1980s) which lead to the ultimate collapse of the Soviet state in 1991.[2][3] Yurchak argues that everyone knew the system was failing, but as no one could imagine any alternative to the status quo, politicians and citizens were resigned to maintaining a pretence of a functioning society.[4] Over time, this delusion became a self-fulfilling prophecy and the "fakeness" was accepted by everyone as real, an effect that Yurchak termed "hypernormalization".[5]

our reaction to the coronavirus is the mental analogue to the reason why we can't tell if large objects are hurtling towards us with great speed. if you stand on some train tracks and watch an oncoming train it won't seem so fast until it's so close it coulda bit ya.

Amazingly, Chicago/Illinois appears to not be loving everything up as bad as the rest of the country. IL is one of two states that actually met the guidelines to reopen with NY being the other. https://blockclubchicago.org/2020/05/27/illinois-is-the-only-state-meeting-trumps-guidelines-for-reopening-amid-coronavirus/ I am moderately proud!

It'll have to take a super famous celebrity to get Covid-19 and actually die to get through america's thick skull that this is straight up serious. If Tom Hank had died way back when he contracted it, the whole open er up would been pushed forward a couple of weeks probably.
