I've enjoyed mocking E3 through the years. Remember when they annouced the xbone and it was going to be a cable box? Classic. I wonder what Todd Howard was going to lie about this year.

It is good that the kinect is fun seeing as it's a totally integrated component of the xbox and quite inseparably by any means.

Can’t remove the Kinect it’s an absolutely necessary component of the Xbox. Stop asking us about it, you’re gonna love petting the tiger, and there’s zero way to remove it.

Anyways, here’s the cheaper Kinect-less version.

It's funny to think about how many billions of dollars were wasted in developing and supporting Kinect, a gimmicky, overly complicated unpopular platform that died very quickly. I bet VR would have never caught on without Microsoft taking huge gambles on Kinect though.

So Kinect was succeeded by another money-burning gimmick but at least the second one was predominantly borne by MS's competitors.

The Kinect 1.0 was the most successful console attachment of all time with like 30% of all 360 users getting one. It made a shitload of money.

The issue is Kinect 2.0 hosed up an entire console generation for ms.

Wasn't that because of it being bundled with almost every single unit after it was released though?

Partly, but it sold insanely well on its own and the bundles represented an uptick in console sales not just maintenance of existing numbers. If you have an attachment people buy bundled over trying to buy unbundled its a pretty successful attachment, you are moving more consoles especially that late in the life cycle.

If you remove everything related to the main storyline in fallout 4, you're left with a functional open world bethesda game full of dumb bullshit in scenic locations running the full gamut of bethesda off-storyline content, which at its best is always better than the main plot. If you perform the same surgery on the bad storyline of the outer worlds you're left with an empty game world with no NPCs and nothing to do. Fallout 4 wins, easily, because it's borderline salvagable like any other bethesda game

Fallout 4 was probably the first Bethesda game that wasn't salvagable at all. I know everyone hates Bethesda games now, but not even mods could save Fallout 4. I wasn't even 10 hours in before I realized that all the quests were "go to this buiilding, clear it, come back" without any stakes or worldbuilding whatsoever. The only thing that was fun about it was having the pip boy menu on my ipad while I played.

Yeah there's absolutely nothing salvageable about that game and it's when all the most hardcore Bethesda apologists I know finally started to realize that their writing staff outputs a lot of stuff but don't actually know how to write anything coherent anymore

the worst thing about fallout 4 imo is that you can call the minutemen incompetent losers, them to gently caress off and refuse to help them and then kill everyone in the railroad and then kill everyone in the brotherhood of steel and then because they only wrote 3 ways to build the teleporter to advance the plot the story just sends you back to preston garvey who you can't kill and he will welcome you with open arms like nothing happened and make you decorate his house and fix his plumbing

they also didn't account for what if you just straight up shoot the guy in the institute. He spooked me and I VATS critted him into Oblivion. I killed him so hard the game didn't know what to do. I ended up having to just find my own way out of thew place and everyone talked to me as if nothing had changed. The Preston route seems to be the default because when I got out of the Institute, it was treated like I sided with the Minituemans

I think I only beat Fallout 4 because the game was the exact perfect blend of mindless and endless to listen to hours and hours of podcasts. I listened to like several years of Radiolabs, a bunch of old 1940-50s fiction podcasts, and plenty else.

It was basically cargo culting, some executive board never made it past "The 360 peripheral is doing pretty good, if we just make an HD version of the Wii from the start then we'll sell even more units than the Wii did!"

And then some Nintendo spy in that board room was like "say that's a great idea", leading to the Wii U lol

VR blows. It's a fun novelty and then it wears off. You're left with a bunch of lovely tech demos, a bunch of lovely motion control games, and a bunch of games I can play normally without wearing a cumbersome monstrosity. Yeah yeah there are a few fun games, but you could also get Beat Saber working on a Switch. VR is the emperors' new clothes in circle jerk format. It's why so many VR fans are insanely defensive and volatile. (Also because True GameRs I guess)

Anytime someone spends money on something they defend their purchase. VR seems like an interesting lark, but mostly for simulation games and not-video games. Teaching in a virtual classroom, porn, that kind of poo poo. It just seems like the games suck and the cost of entry is stupid high, and it seems no matter what price point you enter at, the next step up seems to have all the things you wish you’d had.

A friend of mine bought a VR headset and was so excited about it. I told him about VR porn and he got so excited about it (like a person buys a VR headset without thinking about porn ), he also bought a blowjob machine that would sync up with the VR porn scene. I think that would be pretty cool, I guess. Not $800 cool, of course. I just don’t know how many degenerates are out there versus how many people want to play, idk, beatsaber, or that half-life game, or whatever. But a fool and his money are soon parted, I guess.

If every gamer had a good VR setup, there would be better games, because it would be a huge market worth developing for. As it is, almost nobody has a headset and VR ready PC even among serious master race pc gamers. There's just no money there. Even if every active VR gamer buys your game you'll make less money than selling some indie shovelware sidescroller to the general population by orders of magnitude. As it stands, it's a new medium that's been poorly explored, most entries are either motion gimmicks or regular PC games with VR hacked in whether it makes sense or not, and it'll probably stay that way until you can buy something like an index for under $200 and drive it with a midrange pc because until then there's no market and nobody's going to spend the time and money developing for it

Valve tried to launch a killer app with HL: Alyx but all anyone cared about was whether or not you could patch /mod in a non VR version. Until there's an actual real killer app landing it'll remain a weird niche akin to DDR or Voltex, except less cool somehow.

It doesn’t take much hardware to run VR as far as computer specs go. My laptop runs stuff like Half Life Alyx or H3VR just fine on the mobile version of a GTX1660, which is around 10-15 percent weaker than the desktop version. That’s like a 200 dollar graphics card. Really the main reason I don’t use it more is because setting it all up is a pain in the balls.

VR is not new at all. It's come and gone over the decades multiple times and in various forms. You could even toss it in the 3D TV category if you wanted.

This will always be my favorite video for a showcase of what to expect from VR. It's a few years old at this point, but it still applies.
