Nah but gay picnic defence has a point (imo) because it's clear that the LNP/right-wing have a much better grasp on messaging and brand management at the moment, or at least when they actually needed to. I think a lot on the "left" (whatever that is these days) continue to expect that Australian voters are rational actors who will critically evaluate the evidence and make decisions in their best interest. The big issue here is that it's always been complete horse poo poo and there's entire fields predicated on the fact that individuals aren't rational actors.

I mean it's happened a bunch of times now and I reckon we'll have the same issue in the QLD state election.

i'd argue that the LNP have been targeting swing voters really well, the last election was pretty close but it really shouldn't have been. I know we all act like the LNP won in a landslide but it was like what, 2-3% in favour to the LNP? This is why I am surprised the ALP haven't been going out harder, they had a substantial level of support and they've just been squandering it.

Relatedly, I think the left needs to get better at the emotive plays. A lot of people don't give a poo poo about facts and figures. They don't value objectivity, they go off how they feel about things. It's why politicians kiss babies, vote for innumerable policies that directly and indirectly kill others, and have voters say "yeah but they seem nice". And I don't mean emotive plays like "show them pictures of drowning refugees until they care", because they won't. It's about how they make people feel, and Labor and the Greens suck at it outside of their own natural voter base.

Richard Dennis wrote a reasonable piece in the wake of the election that Labor felt they had to justify their economic management credentials, so spent more time talking about their revenue plans than what they were going to do with them (e.g. free cancer treatment).

It’s much harder to argue against “getting cancer shouldn’t also send you and your family broke”

How are you going to pay for it? “By not giving multinational companies a massive tax cut”

But the other thing that many have pointed out is that the electorates that would have paid more tax under Labor swung Labor anyway, where as the poorest electorates swung Liberal. Ultimately voters both collectively and individually are dumb as loving dog poo poo.

This is the problem. The left has no answer to people who can't be reasoned with. Fact and figures, and appeals to a sense of decency are all they have. They assume all people have an inbuilt ability and desire to critically analyse problems and arrive at a logical solution. Above all, I don't think people on the left want it badly enough. Right wingers will crawl over broken glass to win an election because they love money and winning elections means more money for them and their mates. The left seems satisfied with saying "oh well, we tried" and spending the next 3 years lamenting all the damage being done to society and institutions.

All the Get Up and Greens messaging I see looks like it's just targeted at Greens voters. Marketing 101 says that's a waste of resources but here we are.

We're talking about messaging to people who are not worldly, not critical thinkers, and who give the barest of fucks about anyone other than themselves. Get inside their heads. What are their fears, what do they want from life, what motivates them, what buzzwords and slogans do they connect with that can be used for political ends? Note that you don't have to convince them to vote for a left wing party, simply convincing them to vote for someone other than the LNP or not at all would be sufficient.

The reason Trump's messaging was on point during their election was because they actually did all that and came up with a bunch of really effective slogans like the "Drain the Swamp" one.

You don't convince these people by presenting a bunch of facts about climate change, you create an army of bots to spread memes with boomer style formatting about how Soros is funding fossil fuel companies to keep Australia dependent on foreign energy imports, and how ScoMo is undermining ~The Constitution~. You don't talk about how refugees and other migrants are being hosed over by the LNP, you make it about farmers, tradies and truckies. Don't gently caress around about decorum, make a bunch of memes calling Sco Mo a traitor. Above all, don't spread these via organisations calling themselves names associated with left wing politics, get a bunch of FB pages calling themselves Tradies for 'Straya oval office or something - I don't think people on the left realise how toxic the Greens and 'greenies' are outside of the left.

also that was a lot of words and a good post but also it's been about a decade since "the left" had any form of initiative when it comes to messaging.

We've literally let conservatives dictate what we are arguing about and how we will argue about it, which is poo poo from a strategy point of view. I hate using war analogies here but if you continue to let your opposition dictate where and when you fight, then you end up losing anyway because you are constantly on the defensive.

When the ALP was last in power the opposition was consistently providing talking points, something which I really haven't seen from the ALP in opposition. Yes, we could say that the media is stacked against progressives in politics but when the gently caress is someone going to actually adapt rather than sticking to a losing strategy. Small targets don't work, you've got to push a message which actually means something to the people.

In the current climate, I feel the ALP has decided to go small target Shorten again and hope that the LNP makes some huge policy misstep that people will care about. Here's a loving newsflash, no-one cares because there's no reason for them to care. The sooner they realise that people are hurting because of their failure to take some sort of initiative the better.

The media is stacked against the left? So what? Isn't the left supposed to be full of the types of creative people who should be able to find a different way to get a message across? War analogies are perfect for describing the situation. To use another one, if the media and institutions are biased to the right then maybe there needs to be some lessons learned from asymmetrical warfare to take back some of the initiative. Get stuck in and start a messy battle via social media using every dirty trick in the book. I'm sure taking the high road feels all noble and poo poo, but it's leaving a bunch of vulnerable people to be hosed in the arse by a rapacious right wing.

No, they've been too full of idealists who think you can reason with fuckwit conservatives, and that taking what is perceived as the low road to power is beneath them.

This sort of messaging needs to come from a left wing equivalent of Topham Guerin or Cambridge Analytica anyway, any obvious links to a political party or left wing identity will undo the work it's doing.

That's probably because it's one twitter user, and not an army of bots spreading mass produced memes full of carefully devised trigger phrases around swinging voter and conservative facebook groups.

Mediscare was good, there needs to be more campaigns like it. But it also needs to be broader, and have elements targeted at particular demographics. No point having an education scare campaign targeted at country seats IMO because it's predominantly anti-intellectual rednecks would would probably support it. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-05-28/home-affairs-paladin-manus-island-audit-review/12297076

ABC News posted:

The auditor-general has criticised the processes behind the awarding of multi-million-dollar contracts by the Department of Home Affairs for security services on Manus Island, saying the Government had not demonstrated value for money.

Ahead of last year's federal election, Labor demanded an investigation into the procurement of government contracts by the department, after it was revealed a small security firm registered to a shack on Kangaroo Island won a $420 million contract to undertake security and cleaning services at offshore detention centres in Papua New Guinea.

In calling for an urgent probe, Labor questioned why little-known company Paladin Group was chosen, describing it as an "inexperienced and unknown company".

But in its findings released today, the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) found the department's management of contracts for services on both Manus and Nauru since 2017 were "largely appropriate".

"Procurement activities for the provision of garrison support and welfare services on Manus Island and Nauru were largely undertaken in accordance with [Commonwealth procurement rules]," the report stated.

However, it also found a raft of deficiencies, saying the department failed to demonstrate that contacts for services on Manus Island, including the controversial agreement with Paladin, were value for money.

"The department did not demonstrate the achievement of value for money for the PNG procurements," the report stated.

"Although the department had limited options for comparing tenderer costs, most of the benchmarks it used were not appropriate.

"The effectiveness of negotiation for Paladin was unclear as savings achieved for some items were offset by increases to others, the addition of a mobilisation payment and the department's substantial expansion of the services required during the negotiation process."

Conflict of interest identified by auditors

The report also revealed that five key staff involved in the awarding of contracts on PNG had not filled out conflict of interest forms.

"The department developed a probity management framework, but it was not effectively applied in all instances," the report found.

"Key declaration and acknowledgement forms were not completed by all applicable personnel.

"A departmental officer had multiple roles during the procurement process and the conflict of interest resulting from this was not acknowledged or addressed."

The auditor-general made two recommendations to improve the documentation of decisions and performance reporting, both of which have been adopted by the Government.

"The department agrees with the two recommendations made by the ANAO in this report and has undertaken to implement them as a priority," the department said in its response to the report.

The man who defaced murder victim Eurydice Dixon’s memorial has been sentenced to jail after breaching his community corrections order.
Andrew Nolch initially avoided jail for the criminal damage, offensive behaviour and offensive graffiti charges back in 2018, instead being given an 18-month community-based order after a guilty plea. However, after faking illness with his corrections officer to travel overseas, Nolch has been sentenced to 5 months in jail.
The 31-year-old allegedly travelled overseas to Asia on two separate occasions without seeking the permission of his parole officer, therefore breaching the conditions of his order.
Back in 2019, Nolch allegedly told corrections officers he was moving house, while actually on holidays in the Philippines, 9News reports. Since then, he has failed to attend a number of community service appointments and again lied about his whereabouts, claiming he was sick when he was actually in Thailand.
In court on Thursday, Andrew’s lawyer argued that it was a case of “mere stupidity” and that he was simply unaware that the conditions of the order prohibited him from leaving the state of Victoria.
However, County Court Judge Susan Pullen refuted this argument, asserting that “he’s not stupid” before replaying an 11-minute clip of the original sentence hearing, in which she clearly outlined every condition of the order.
“What part was not clear? I warned him,” Judge Pullen said.
Nolch is still required to pay the $19,500 compensation order that was imposed, but will now also serve 5 months in prison. Additionally, he has been charged with driving while disqualified, as well as drug importation and possession, 9 News reports.
