Aliexpress hides the listings of a lot of masks if you're in the US.
That might explain why all the freebie listings for masks have disappeared in the past week or so. It definitely didn't help that the vast majority of the "questions" on each listing were people cursing out the Chinese en masse for unleashing this virus on the world, then turning around and trying to make a buck off of it. :( Thankfully there were a couple people pointing out that China didn't exactly get off scot-free in this whole pandemic.

After that one seller asked me to cancel my order because it would take a while to get it to me, I explained that I was patient and asked them to extend the purchase protection period. They replied that they'd reassessed the situation, that delivery shouldn't take that long after all, but they also extended the delivery window by (or to?) a generous 90 days, reminded me to extend it again if necessary, and shipped my poo poo off immediately. Prompt and receptive service--a nice counterpoint to the scammier sellers we see. Of course, it could all be bullshit.

Speaking of Aliexpress lenses, has anyone bought DSLR objectives from Aliexpress or some place similar? I'm in the market for an objective and I've spotted some fairly cheap options on Chinese websites but I want to hear experiences before buying.

I bought one of those huge lenses from AliExpress and the zoom is amazing (the moon is bigger than the entire frame on my K-5), but the chromatic aberration is pretty bad and the zoom goes way past infinity, so it's very difficult to focus. You also need two tripods to keep things steady when fully zoomed in. Probably worth the $360 'cause I got some very cool shots with it that I couldn't have otherwise, but boy did I have to work for them.

And for those who are curious, I tried REALLY hard to get a bad smell out of the tellurium. A match isn't hot enough to ignite it, I couldn't get the magnesium ribbon to light either for the same reason. I dumped acetone on it and burned that, which looked awesome, but didn't ignite it. I tried some oxidizers and acids, and after all that, it had a really unpleasant odor, but much of that's probably attributable to the chemicals themselves. The next step was to try eating a bit, but my wife vetoed that, so I guess I'm going to have to buy some sparklers to really get this stuff hot.

Has anyone bought any of the Lepin fake lego sets? What's the general quality like and what's some good sets to buy? Looking for a fairly big build to keep me a bit occupied during this quarantine. Though I realise by the time it arrives this will probably be over.
They’re really quite good! I went off the deep end on bootlego during winter and now quarantine, and the bricks are generally 98% lego quality, though clutch on some minifigs are sometimes hit and miss. Generally the bricks are much better quality than megablocks for instance, and they snap in with Lego no problem.

If you’re looking for some good sets to start with, the modulars such as brick bank are great. The Ninjago theme buildings are a fun build. The fairground mixer was a really cool build as well. And of course there’s always Star Plan

The treehouse is one of my favorites, though it is also a current lego set.

As far as brands go, King/Queen are the new lepin brands after the raid, and Panda/Zebra appear to be lepin, but sacrificial names to bootleg current lego sets. Mould King, Decool, SY, Sembo all use the same bricks, which are just as good as or slightly better than lepin. Yourwobb is consistently good to buy bootlego from, and they do have some of the minifigs packs though not a lot. If you want to buy from Aliexpress, look for stores with >98% rating and read reviews. Currently Aliexpress is tough to buy from because sellers are still listing stupidly cheap prices, with the hopes of sitting on orders till shipping prices drop with the resumption of international flights. 50/50 you sit on an order for months with no idea if/when it’ll ship, but I think some stores like loltoy have decent reviews... ymmv.

sticksy posted:

Now all of the sellers/stores are no longer available and my cursory searching there and Google makes it look like they've cracked down on lots of the standard sized mini-fig Lego knockoffs from before/Kopf/Lepin so I probably missed out on some fun random hero mash-up and weird movie figures :smith:.

If someone knows alternative places or good brand names to search, please let me know..!
Yeah, Ali recently cracked down on minfigs, which is a shame as there were some good ones like The 7 from The Boys.

I'll get some shots over the weekend. Was trying so hand held shots on weekend but too blurry - I was sniping a sparrow three houses away and up a tree. I have a new tripod and intervalometre arrived to remote trigger so hoping to get something decent to show it off. I've never done night photography specifically wanting stars and the moon. So learning fast with some youtube videos and backyard testing.

EDIT: Moon snuck out from cloud cover and I grabbed a few snaps to test: This is before processing anything and just a quick gently caress around with settings:

After dinner I'll either edit this post or make a new one with the 'after' shot cleaning stuff in Lightroom.

Meh, lazy. Here's a link to the full frame (hopefully at 100% scale on Imgur):

And a 100% crop off the full frame:

I'm terrible at Lightroom bout I'm happy with the results for such a cheap lens that I spent 5 minutes taking a few photos with manual focus and basic noise and colour corrections.

It's a bit of a crap shoot. I have stuff from April trickling in randomly, at a few parcels, a couple of times a week. Everything's been handed over to the airline, so I'm guessing cargo space is tight with the lack of air travel. This is to Australia which is more tightly connected to China than many other parts of the world, but I would have thought America would be in a similar position.

Airfreight is absolutely hosed at the moment: it turns out that a lot of it goes in the hold of passenger planes and if people aren't travelling for leisure or business, then there is a big capacity issue and the price has skyrocketed.

Our trinkets are bottom of the pile when it comes to priority.

You'll get it in 5-6 days instead of 5-6 months.

Also I just got some this month from several vendors, the Veanic two pack has great quality tools but one of the sticks drifted out of the box. Linkstyle 6 Pack has the most close-to-OEM design and quality I've found yet.
