So I'm looking to kick off a Blood Bowl season at the LGS once COVID blows over (whenever that may be).

I want it to be super casual and a way for people to start off in it. Any ideas for stuff I should do outside the normal rules? I'm thinking of maybe doing a once per season "super apothecary" that lets a coach turn a dead player into they miss next game.

I ask because a few years ago another guy tried running one and a few people that were experienced with the game were also assholes. Like spending turns 13-16 just trying to injure and kill the other players even though they were up like >3 TDs. While within the rules, some of their opponents did not come back after that.

Edit: If there's an actual Blood Bowl thread, please point me to it. I searched and couldn't find one.

Just in case y'all aren't keeping up with the Hams for Hunger thread:

A few weeks ago, I was contacted by Hedningen who had an idea on how to help promote this thread and encourage some more donations. He doesn't paint much, but he does sculpt and he volunteered to make a special plague doctor model exclusive to this thread/event. I have really appreciated all the effort he's put into this and, with the model complete and casting starting up, we are ready to make the announcement:

To keep it simple, anyone that makes a donation of at least $20 will qualify for a copy of this model. Limit one per person, please. PM or e-mail me your name/address and I will collect and send them on to Hedningen. Again, the e-mail is Hams4Hunger at gmail.com. He will handle the casting and shipping and is in the US Midwest somewhere. UK/Euro participants, don't worry, I've figured something out for y'all. I've got a friend in the UK that is willing to act as a go-between and forward your models to you.

Hedningen has already been working on getting a small stockpile going so let's get some donations in!

A $20 donation gets you a free model! Please donate to a charity of your choice, preferably a local food bank, homeless shelter, or something assisting with the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

A little update on the thread:
Things have gone much faster than I expected.  I have already hit my original $5000 limit, but in an effort to keep things going longer I have pledged another $2,000.  Goonhammer has also sponsored $500 and there are still almost $2000 in unfinished challenges.  Combine that all with existing donations and we are looking at over $10,000 in charitable contributions by the end of this.

Unfortunately, BB is like that, especially when you start getting into campaigns and someone starts dominating. I mean, BB is a brutal game all around, even without assholes, and if you like a team in a low tier, you're screwed.

While not exactly BB, have you looked at Blitz Bowl? It's definitely quicker, lighter, and easier to get into and have fun with if you're a more casual player.

You could run tourney rules with set team costs, no lasting injuries and predefined advances, it tends to leave specific teams dominant but such is the game. Players can still be fuckers whatever you do.

The house rules I use for the league I run:

quote:

Highlander
No player on a team can take the same skill set as another player of the same position on the team at the same time (excluding starting skills).

For players with multiple skills, the order in which skills are taken doesn’t matter – it’s the combination that needs to be unique. Stat increases do not count as skills for these purposes. You have to pick a skill when the player levels up – you can’t “save” a potential skill until a later date, if the skill you want would cause a duplication.

Example: if you give a Lineman Block as their frst skill, no other Linemen can take Block as their first skill. However, once this Lineman has acquired a second skill, another Lineman may take Block as their first skill.

This rule is intended to reduce cookie-cutter skill selection, especially for top-tier teams. It affects some team rosters more than others and coaches should take this into account when selecting a race.

Flash Gitz
A team will receive +1 FAME for a match if every player model on the roster is painted and based to a tabletop standard of a minimum of 3 colours. This excludes miniatures used for Journeymen, Mercenaries and Star Players.

If in doubt, coaches should check with their opponent that their team meets this criteria. If there is any disagreement they should ask the Commissioner or other players for a ruling if possible.

Triage
A coach can choose to roll on the Casualty Table at the end of the game rather than when the Casualty takes place. The coach can then decide which result on the Casualty Table to use their Apothecary on, if they have one.

As per the NAF clarifications, Regeneration is rolled after you choose to use the Apothecary or not. You can not choose not to use the Apothecary, fail a Regeneration roll and then use the Apothecary afterwards.

Safe Pair Of Hands
At the end of a match, a coach may “retire” any player from their roster and turn them into an Assistant Coach for free. This does not include temporary players such as Star Players, Mercenaries, or Journeymen. This new Assistant Coach still counts towards Team Value as usual.

The Triage rule does kinda affect teams that get free zombies, unless they can cause multiple deaths in one game.

Highlander screws balance for teams with a low number of positions (Lizards and Vampires, mainly) but it stops top-tier teams dominating and encourages veteran players to try something more interesting than the standard progression route.

Each warband comes with a set of cards that can only be used in a deck by that warband, and a set of cards that can be used in any warband's deck. You can use the generic cards from Beastgrave and Thorns to your liking when constructing a deck, even to the exclusion of the warband specific cards (although there are rules for how many of each subtype - Objective, and Power subtypes - you can have).

The only complication is that they've based WH:U on a seasonal model, where a warband's specific cards will always remain legal but their generic cards will eventually rotate out every two seasons. Beastgrave generics will still be good next season but Thorns was from season 2 and its generics will be rotating out once season 4 gets its first releases. There's also a banned/restricted list.

If you're a casual player it's not too big a deal but if you're doing pickup or competitive events it may need to be something to watch out for.

I like this except for Triage, because that has potentially huge implications on apothecary use in tactical sense. Sometimes using Apo on a Badly Hurt player is absolutely the right thing to do because then it goes into reserves. Much more important in Knock Out matches where winning the fixture is the most important thing.

You'd be surprised. One person took Pact through to the finals with this rule in place.

That said, they've also taken Ogres through to the finals with the same rule, so they're a very good and/or lucky coach.

In case it's not clear, you can still use the apo on a Badly Hurt player in exactly the same way as usual - it just adds "banking" the apo roll to the end of the match and choosing who it applies to.

It's a rule I inherited from the previous commissioner when I took over our local league, and although it still has some issues I want to try and work through, I think it works well for a club that has a spread of player ability.

But how can you do that if you roll the casualties at the end?

Edit: I see, it’s “may choose to roll casualties at the end” ... interesting. I think that’s a trap choice for coaches who are overly attached to their players. One of the things that’s best about an Apo is that he can bring a player back in *for the remainder of the game*

But it’s good that it’s an option, I’d like to see what impact it makes and how often players elect to do this.

I bought the $150 Titanicus starter box because I just got a raise at work and I’m bad with money, how badly did I gently caress up?

Also can someone confirm my sanity, I swear I saw that the Titan command terminals had holes that the little reactor/status pips could rest in, but the ones in the $150 box don’t seem to have that? Am I imagining things?

I just think the “tactile” nature of moving pips to locked locations on the command terminal as if it’s a control board is cool I guess. :kiddo:

Yeah, the new starter box (and the terminals that are now packaged with titans sold separately) are on thinner card with no punched-out holes to save money.

It's about the only thing about the new starter box that isn't awesome, though.

Speaking of command terminals, I bought the Questoris Knight 3-pack box that has 3 mini Imperial Knights a while back, should that have come with command terminals?

Edit— I’ve built the pair of little Cerastus knights from the Titanicus box, how should I kit out the 4 bigger guys so they’re each somewhat different but reasonably balanced so I can mix and match the knights if I’m using the box set to play with a friend? That way we’re not always shooting at each other with the same guns every game, etc.
