I remember seeing someone post a guide to getting DF2 Jedi Knight running and looking decent on modern Windows 10 hardware. Can someone repost that? I'd be happy enough to just play the game in 800x600 without a black screen. I downloaded the JKUltimate patch, but all that has done is stretch the game across my ultrawide monitor with a super narrow FOV. Changing the in game settings or the DGVoodoo settings do not seem to affect anything.

Here's my guide. It'll set you up to play in a window. I don't know if there's a stable way to play in fullscreen on modern Windows, especially since the menus HAVE to be windowed to work properly.

I never played Descent 2 when it was new, I only had the Descent 1 Shareware on a PowerMac but that was plenty to keep me busy. Descent 2 is downright sadistic, the difficulty increase is evil and I'm surprised people were even able to beat it with the control setups of the time.

Ok, following this guide to a T mostly works, however the one anomaly I'm seeing is this weird texture glitch where certain textures, like skyboxes, "duplicate" many times over giving that weird hall-of-mirrors effect. Not sure what's causing that.

Edit: Disregard. I tried the same steps on the Steam installation instead of GOG, and it works much better.

battleborn was fun but had some instances of truly horrendous art design. i think that is what overwatch had over it, the polish and consistency. and billions and billions of dollars.

Hmm. DFORCEDH does not work on my laptop (in dosbox); the game loads up fine and mouselook works, but every few seconds my character spins around randomly, which is...a problem.

Not sure if this is some mouse input issue that only manifests in dosbox or an issue with DFORCEDH, guess I'll have to try it on the desktop tomorrow.

I've got Mysteries of the Sith setup following the same instructions as Jedi Knight. It works pretty much the same, but the game just feels weird to control, and I can't explain it. It feels "imprecise" and my dude leans to the left and right a lot when strafing. Is this normal?

Y'know despite having a limited color palette and textures to work with, Ion Storm did a good job at making each major area of Deus Ex look and feel unique. New York, Paris, and Hong Kong all feel quite different from one another. The music goes a long way to help establish that, of course. Still impressive.

I love this game.

Is Battleborne the game where a bunch of distorted weirdos shout memes at lovecraftian nightmares in a Victorian-era city?

Here are some potential distractions. Are they welcome distractions? That's between you and the higher power of your choosing.
  • Here's one of those rare things: a new Hexen 2 map! Shifting Sands was designed for the Shadows of Chaos mod.
  • Akeldama has reached final release, bringing you 32 levels of Memento Mori-style classic throwback megawad action.
  • Unfamiliar has updated with a new episode of old worlds with a fresh lick of paint.
  • Jimmy's assembling another community music project for the MIDI-savvy, this time paying tribute to Heretic and Hexen.
  • Looking to get back into making your own mods? The author of Beautiful Doom has been putting together a ZScript Basics guide for knuckle-dragging non-programmers who may have messed with DECORATE in the past.

Battleborn has that same appeal that Paladins does in that it doesn't have the Blizzard polish. Overwatch is rigid, making you play each hero the same way every match. You always need a healer, even if nobody wants to actually play one (so anytime I play, I have to be healer even though I hate it). Blizzard also rigidly enforces the meta. In Battleborn, you could play assassin type heroes as healers. The BB characters were also cooler. Yeah, some of them looked dumb, but they all at least had some personality. They'd all have dozens of lines each related to killing specific heroes, while Overwatch is always just something like "We can do this!" or a single pun about their ability. Battleborn wasn't perfect, though. It made a lot of dumb mistakes that ended up hurting the game as much as Overwatch did. For just a few:

-Inserting free-to-play mechanics into a full-priced game. You pay $60 just to have three quarters of the heroes locked at the start, as well as having stuff like loot boxes. For Paladins, you get free entry and you can easily grind out heroes. Or, you can pay something like $15 to unlock all of them.

-The particle effects were a way worse component of the visual design than any of the character models. Not only were they hard to look at, they absolutely destroyed streaming codecs, making it hard to take advantage of streamers who were genuinely into the game.

-Completely unnecessary single-player component, that while pretty decent, gave away more and better rewards than playing the multi-player, ensuring that people were not actually playing the multiplayer.

-Randy was hot off of grifting everyone with Colonial Marines (though I still can't understand what everyone was hyped about, that original trailer looked pretty bad even at the time).

-It seemed to want to pull a more casual crowd into MOBAs, but did nothing to try to convey how MOBAs were supposed to work. As a result, people would pick a hero, load into a match, then try to kill other heroes. Cue them raging about the invincible spider turrets as they get destroyed over and over again.

MOD music was a cool feature of the Unreal 1.x engine, added because it's light on hardware resources while being more flexible than Redbook audio and more consistent than MIDI across a wide range of configurations. When you were lucky to have MMX at all, let alone a Pentium II, that counted for a lot. Unreal's (and UT99's) music was no slouch either.

It's just "quirky." Teenage Engineering, the designers/distributors of the device itself, specialize in twee/quirky/whatever nebulous adjective to describe electronics in an aesthetic that are like "what if Apple designed Nintendo's Game & Watch."

I had a really negative opinion because it was initially announced as a closed platform but if this dude is making stuff for it I'll have to give it a second look. I do like the aesthetics of things like Pico-8 and other little micro engines.

e: yes, functionally it is another input.

Thanks to working from home, I've finally managed to finish DOOM (2016) on my lunch breaks. Now I'm looking to tackle something that's been in my queue seemingly forever: Thief: Deadly Shadows. What's the best way to get it tastefully enhanced for a modern Windows 10 machine? (With a Creative Labs EAX sound card, I should also mention)

A relatively recent guide I found by googling suggests a one-size-fits-all solution called "The Sneaky Upgrade". Is that the ticket?

The singleplayer is what made Battleborn worthwhile. The moba part was a waste of developer money and player time. The coop campaign was great and if they had focused on just that they could have had either twice the missions or sold the game for a half the price - and either way, it would have been way more successful and drawn less Overwatch comparisons from uninformed media.

I’m about 7 mission into Dark Forces. I played this game back in ‘95 and haven’t messed with it since really, and never played the sequels. And drat this game has really held up! The level and mission design was way ahead of its time and those missions still hold up. It still feels like “Star Wars” in the best way!

Another issue with Battleborn not mentioned yet is it had no idea, tonally, what it was supposed to be. It has lots of Saturday Morning Cartoon aesthetic elements and then piles of unprompted cursing and sex jokes. I really think the biggest weaknesses of Battleborne was its loving terrible marketing, Randy Pitchford, and the aforementioned cash-shop mentality in a game you paid 60 bucks for.

The PvE was really good in Battleborne and Overwatch's sequel is literally "hey maybe we should do the singleplayer Battleborne launched with" which is kind of frustrating in a "people mock Battleborn and had no idea it had so much of the stuff they wished Overwatch had" way.

Edit: one other issue, there was a character that was the "this is clearly call of duty" so new players gravitated to him very hard. Later you could unlock a character who went rogue from the same force and the went rogue version was strictly superior which felt bad when you were just murdering newbies with him.

Oh and the water healer was 100% broken powerful at launch jeez how did that make it live

The level design was a little maze-y for me at times, but that's coming from a guy whose introduction to shooters was Halo. I think I got hung up on some mission where I was running out of ammo, but I definitely played into it a ways. And there were a lot of fun levels, for sure!

That, and its storyline was kind of dark in a cool way, and they could have pulled it off so much better. Usually, games like that just go "uh, there was a portal or something." But Battleborn explained the different characters away as everyone being from different solar systems, and were forced into the last remaining one that could support life.

It's by far the best written and funniest game Gearbox has made. Unlike Borderlands, the characters are actual characters and the situation they're in is taken seriously by them. That lets the jokes land and the threats seem threatening.
