Beijing is considering handing out punishments to those who damage the reputation of traditional Chinese medicine, according to a new draft regulation issued Friday.

The document, jointly drafted by several local government departments, including the Beijing Municipal Health Commission and Beijing Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, aims to deter individuals and organizations from behaviors that defame or slander TCM in any way.

Those who violate the proposed rules by “picking quarrels, provoking trouble, and disrupting public order” may be subject to punishments by public security organs or even face criminal responsibility. However, the guideline did not say what behaviors might constitute defaming TCM.

The draft regulation — on which the public is invited to submit feedback for one month — also proposes a ban on the false advertising of TCM and its use to harm public interests, while also suggesting requirements about its management.

In recent years, several scandals have raised public concerns over TCM. Last July, a children’s hospital in the eastern Jiangxi province suspended one of its traditional treatments, sanfutie, after dozens of children complained of side effects such as blisters, itchiness, and burns. And in April 2018, medical professionals questioned law enforcement after a doctor was arrested on suspicion of defaming a brand of herbal liquor that was criticized by drug authorities for false advertising.

Nonetheless, authorities in China have continued promoting TCM therapies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the country included traditional remedies in its national diagnosis and treatment guideline for the disease. The sixth version of the guideline, released Feb. 18, detailed which herbal formulas should be used to treat different symptoms of the disease.

The UK is already in talks with allies including the US and Australia about what to do if China imposes the new law - which would make it a crime to undermine Beijing's authority - and people start fleeing Hong Kong.

In the Times on Wednesday, the prime minister confirmed that if China passes the law, people in Hong Kong who hold British National (Overseas) passports will be allowed to come to the UK for 12 months without a visa. Currently, they are allowed to come for six months.

Around 350,000 people in Hong Kong currently already have a BNO passport, but 2.6 million others are also eligible.

Passport-holders would also be given further immigration rights, including the right to work.

This "could place them on a route to citizenship," Mr Johnson said.

I will have to ask our immigration minister what our (NZ) stance is.

Will they be allowed status as political refugees? If so will they be restricted to the refugee quota? Could there be possible loosening of criteria via other paths of immigration and if not citizenship, the right to work or permeant residency? What support do we or could give. Who currently qualifies for assistance.

I am aware this is an increasingly fast moving issue thus subject is change especially with COVID-19 complications. I appreciate any information or Mr’s personal stance on the matter.

Here's a bit of a poo poo sandwich - African-Americans are getting caught up in the racist hysteria that's been going on in Guangzhou. But while some African countries have been pretty outspoken in protest, in an absolutely shocking turn of events the Trump administration has pretty much sat on its hands when it comes to protecting black Americans overseas.

‘We Need Help’: Coronavirus Fuels Racism Against Black Americans in China

African governments have loudly protested abuse of their citizens in China, but the Trump administration’s response to harassment of African-Americans has been muted.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/02/us/politics/african-americans-china-coronavirus.html

quote:

Jeff Remmington, an American professional basketball player trying his hand in China, had already been through xenophobic hell: ostracized in Guangzhou, where he was once celebrated for his acrobatic dunks, denied service at a restaurant with his 4-year-old son because of his skin color, quarantined for two weeks, though he showed no signs of coronavirus infection, he said.

But the breaking point came in May when he tried to find a new apartment. He had finally found a landlord who would rent to a “foreigner,” signed a lease, and was preparing to move when neighborhood officials stepped in.

“Good evening, fellow neighbors!” read a message that circulated in a neighborhood WeChat group, according to screenshots reviewed by The New York Times. A real estate agency has “introduced an African family to rent in our neighborhood. Is money more important than lives?” It continued, “African people are a high-risk group, and Guangzhou people are all not renting to them. But in our neighborhood, some people see money and get wide-eyed.”

quote:

The two women interviewed by The Times work for Disney English in Guangzhou. After one Disney employee tested positive last month for the coronavirus, contact tracing led to the quarantine of 43 employees, including 23 Chinese and 20 foreign employees, a Disney spokeswoman said. Four employees tested positive and were hospitalized. A fifth — the African-American woman who called the consulate from the hospital — said she was told her test was positive, and she was hospitalized for seven days.

After health workers informed her that her test was a false positive, she was moved to an isolation room in the hospital, where she remained for an additional 14 days, she said.

“It was like prison,” she said. “I called the U.S. Consulate. I called the company I work for. I called my U.S. representative too, to see what they can do to get me out. They kept telling me ‘you have to follow Chinese law, there’s nothing that we can do.’”

While she was confined, someone released her personal data and the false information that she had the virus to online WeChat groups in Guangzhou, including one for residents of her apartment building.

“They had my passport number, my full name, my telephone number, my full address, the place where I worked and the address,” the American said. “Literally, someone could have come knock on my door.”

The woman’s teaching assistant was contacted by the parent of a Disney English student who had seen the message, asking whether it was true she had Covid-19. An investigation by the U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou suggested a Chinese government employee had released the information, she said. Disney said it began an internal investigation that confirmed the leak did not come from within the company, and advised an employee to report the breach to the consulate. The consulate declined to comment for the record.

quote:

Now Mr. Remmington is trying to get himself and his son home to Florida, but flights are expensive and have long travel times.

He has tried to shield his son from the discrimination — not telling him, for example, that the restaurant employee who turned them away in April had cited their skin color. He told his son the restaurant had run out of food.

“I don’t want my son to have this preconceived notion of Chinese people being racist,” Mr. Remmington said. “Could you imagine my son going back to his school and telling his friends that?”

I admire the guy's optimism and willingness to protect his son from all of it, but uh, I have some real bad news for him

Boris just wrote a opinion piece for the smcp where he confirmed they'd have right to work. We'll have to see more details as they come out, coronavirus lockdown should st least give the government's and civil service time to work out some plans.

Boris Johnson posted:

Today, about 350,000 of the territory’s people hold British National Overseas passports and another 2.5 million would be eligible to apply for them. At present, these passports allow visa-free access to the United Kingdom for up to six months.

If China imposes its national security law, the British government will change our immigration rules and allow any holder of these passports from Hong Kong to come to the UK for a renewable period of 12 months and be given further immigration rights, including the right to work, which could place them on a route to citizenship

Something intriguing from the bad place.

https://www.huffingtonpost.in/entry...URdPVpIT2DpDpBj

quote:

Throughout January, the World Health Organization publicly praised China for what it called a speedy response to the new coronavirus and thanked the Chinese government for sharing the genetic map of the virus “immediately.”

But in fact, Chinese officials sat on releasing the genetic map, or genome, of the deadly virus for over a week after multiple government labs had fully decoded it, not sharing details key to designing tests, drugs and vaccines. Strict controls on information and competition within the Chinese public health system were largely to blame, The Associated Press has found from internal documents, emails and dozens of interviews.

Health officials only released the genome after a Chinese lab published it ahead of authorities on a virology website on Jan 11. Even then, China stalled for at least two weeks more on giving WHO the details it needed, according to recordings of multiple internal meetings held by the U.N. health agency in January — all at a time when the outbreak arguably might have been dramatically slowed.

Although WHO continued to publicly commend China, the recordings obtained by the AP show they were concerned China was not sharing enough information to assess the risk posed by the new virus, costing the world valuable time.

“We’re currently at the stage where yes, they’re giving it to us 15 minutes before it appears on CCTV,” said WHO’s top official in China, Dr. Gauden Galea, referring to the state-owned China Central Television, in one meeting.

 Did they not learn anything with SARs?

quote:

The AP has found rather than colluding with China, WHO was itself largely kept in the dark, as China gave it only the minimal information required. But the agency did attempt to portray China in the best light, most likely to coax the country into providing more outbreak details.

WHO officials worried about how to press China for more information without angering authorities or jeopardizing Chinese scientists, whom they praised for decoding the genome with astonishing speed. Dr. Michael Ryan, WHO’s emergencies chief, said the best way to “protect China” was for WHO to do its own independent analysis, because otherwise the spread of the virus between people would be in question and “other countries will take action accordingly.”

The doctors as expected are not in on it, hopelessly naive for sure, but the leadership sure the hell guilty. You can't act like that and not seen as colluding even without Taiwan in the picture.
