I figure this thread is the best one to ask in - there's one specific 80s computer that everyone nuts out about being the genesis "cyber deck". Someone's trying to sell me a Yamaha cx5m as that but I don't think it is. Amstrad is tickling my brain as "the one". Tia!

But isn't that too recent to be the one that inspired Gibson's Ono-Sendai in '83? quote:I think I could also see that they were very likely to get more complicated games than Pong pretty quick. Which indeed they did. I had that, I had the big bus stop posters of the actual computer part of the Apple IIc, which was smaller than most briefcases. It was a very crisp-suited businessman arm, holding this thing, and it didn’t show you that there was this big clunky monitor that you had to have. He was just holding this thing with a keyboard on it. I knew people who were starting to buy Sinclairs and kits, building kits, like these incredibly primitive little computers that, you built it, and you had to keystroke all of the programs into it, and if you made a single mistake, the whole thing wouldn’t work. But I knew that people did that. I started hearing about people that connected home computers distantly via telephone, and because, fortunately, I knew absolutely nothing about computers, I was able to smoosh that all together and get this vague vision of my arena, which I then need a really hot name for.

Sagebrush posted:100%. i know it would be destroying a piece of computer history and all, but i wonder if you could cram a NUC into that sony thing almost assuredly. the boards are tiny, half the room in a nuc is for the ssd bonus that all this poo poo runs off 12v so cram a lipo pack in there as well a lot of them have an internal USB header as well so you can get the keyboard / sd reader / whatever hooked up with zero solder hackery on the board itself. they sell naked USB hub boards with pin headers for industrial use, hang it all off that and plug that in.
