what is it you're looking for in these games? I tend to play them for a little bit to gently caress around and then never again. Never cared or finished their stories, usually get bored if there aren't any cheatcodes. the crazy taxi modes usually are limited and its fun to shoot cops or whatever but a lot of the crimes i do just feel rude or accidental. idk, maybe throw some animal crossing in there so i'm invested in the city

the one i keep coming back to is san andreas because i really like open-world action games that have a "life sim" layer to some degree. i like bopping around town going clothes shopping and getting haircuts and hamburgers and customizing beater cars. the car handling and street maps are really good in that one which makes just driving around visiting places fun in itself, and the huge map lends it a lot of variety. i've played them all a bunch of times but 3 and vice city aren't as engaging to me outside of the missions, whose appeal for me at this point is pretty much just nostalgia. vice city's atmosphere and aesthetic are obviously top-notch but it doesn't get its hooks into me as soon as i start playing the way san andreas does.

as far as the hd ones go, i loved 4 when it came out because the density and detail of the city and its inhabitants. i also loved the physics system. i know everybody complains about it because niko lumbers around and the cars slide everywhere but the overall fidelity of the city simulation was just some next-level poo poo to me at that time, having played several hundred hours of the ps2 trilogy. the mission design is horrible though, the story is mostly bad (although i appreciated their attempt at giving the player character a real motivation and reason for being a murderous lunatic), and it's just so loving insanely long and monotonous. i played through it twice in the year or two after its release and i've tried to come back to it a number of times but i can never even get halfway through the story.

gta 5 brought back most of the stuff i loved about san andreas and combined it with the stuff i loved about 4 while placing an even greater emphasis on stunt driving and rpg-style development but they managed to ruin it with one of the worst stories i've ever suffered through in a video game. the more time passes since i finished it the more i hate it. everyone just loving sucks rear end and any time someone opens their mouth the game gets worse

if they do another gta game i'd like to play as someone at least somewhat likeable and not a total psycho. like a normie drawn into a criminal conspiracy and they have to learn to survive in the underworld. i'd also like to see a plot that's more influenced by player choice and missions that aren't just little bite-size setpieces with no effect on the game world. also, it should be set in 1970s detroit

the gta 4 driving physics are extremely fun because it turns the game into tokyo drift once you realise the weightyness lets you throw cars around corners in giant slides

It's fun as hell. I'm 50 hours in on my first playthrough now and having a great time. I'm finally starting to feel confident in taking out bigger tier threats.

I have been steadily adding mods to reduce some of the tedium involved with training larger squads and maintaining an outpost + generally making some stuff faster though.

Trust your instincts, 3 is a mediocre cover shooter with mean-spirited Rockstar/Dan Houser writing instead of campy-noir Sam Lake writing. It's as if Dan Houser had just seen the movie Man on Fire and thought it would be better if you got Bruce Willis instead of Denzel and shoved it all in the mushy-feeling GTA game engine.

Some people will be along shortly to tell me that I am wrong and max payne 3 is good actually, but no, they are Wrong and max payne 3 sucks rear end

your brother brian died before the game starts and your surviving brother sweet gets shot at the end of act 1 but survives and ends up in jail where he sits for most of the rest of the game while you're out becoming a rich landlord

I have the same recruit mod + recruit prisoners (which seems pretty cool since it has unique recruit dialogue for various NPCs around the world even if it can get a bit cheaty if you abuse it too much), I also increased the recruit limit since I was getting close to the 30 with my settlement getting bigger and bigger.

Modding all the various production stations to have 10x the output slots helped a lot with making my settlement automation work properly without constant micromanagement. Now I can actually go exploring with my main combat squad and be confident that the settlement actually functions in the background.

The cheatiest mod I got is probably the advanced training dummies which lets you tech training dummies for pretty much every stat and goes to a pretty high level. Manually training new recruits when you start getting a sizable squad just became too annoying otherwise.

so, thread question: what systems/mechanics have been added to a game that seem at first glance to be papering over a weakness or failing, but maybe are actually generally good and should be standard?

to give this weird question context, I posted about playing through FFXII:TZA and really enjoying it. I would have liked it either way, but the speed-up functions really helped. I also just finally finished Xenoblade 2, a game I liked less but am still pretty positive on and one thing it really could use is the same speed-up functions. In fact, I'd say that no only every Xenoblade game could use it but most jrpgs. I can see the argument that this is an inherent weakness of the genre, that they're often too slow, but I'm not so sure anymore. I'm think that standard speed control features could just be another way to give the player more control over their experience, just like difficulty options and the option to grind. I, like many people in this thread, have played a fuckload of rpgs so there is a lot of stuff experiences players are just going to get and be able to blast through without much thought, but I remember being a child and thinking FF4 and FF6 were actually pretty challenging. while i found XBC2 to be more obtuse than actually difficult, i have to imagine there are children now playing who find it very tough, and parts that I would have sped through they would take slow and carefully.

The combat in Xenoblade 2 is way too active for a speed up to work well.

It works in FF12 because 99% of the time you aren't doing anything anyway
