Late to the NA beer chat, but there's a phenomenal capitalism.txt story there.

In prewar Japan, beer was considered a foreign luxury and taxed heavily compared to wine and liquor, and the tax remained high even during the post-occupation rice famine (due to both decolonization and forced capitalist reforms to the farming system) that was somewhat papered over by wheat aid from the US.
So when things began to settle down to an economy stable enough to at least support depression luxuries like heavy drinking in the cities, there came a limited set of options - imported liquor was obviously inaccessible, including the sippable blend that was popular prewar; the standard mixers for the local liquor were inaccessible as well, and shots went too fast for an unemployed populace; rice that would have made the local wine was mostly reserved for keeping belly from meeting back; and beer prices were sky-high between demand from occupation forces and the old tax structure.

Enter the essentially untaxed NA beer-grain liquor cocktail, which is still a run-down diner mainstay.

"While our financial results for 2018 were the best in our history, we didn't realize our full potential," Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said in the company's earnings report. "To help us reach our full potential, we have made a number of important leadership changes."

The filing also states that Activision Blizzard employees typically earn less than one-third of 1% of Kotick's earnings.

They pay like garbage, too, because "you get to work for Blizzard." It looks very good on a resume, so they get away with it. But that has driven off most of their longtime developers.

I don't think they're in a great place right now, but I don't know for sure; their Diablo mobile game was a flop (probably because of how they launched it), the WC3 remake was a disaster, Heroes of the Storm is basically dead, and I don't fully know how Hearthstone is doing, but I feel like it was falling in popularity before the whole Hong Kong thing.

They've got WoW and WoW Classic, but I'm not sure how much longer they can continue to cruise on those through sheer momentum.

There's a lot of weird incestuous backdoor deals with video game companies in general, like who is the dev, the publisher, the rights holder etc. so you get things like the big names, Bethesda, Activision, Bioware, farming out working to other studios and then loving them on residuals, bonuses, and such but when studio A ends up shuttering because of getting screwed over by Activision it doesn't count as "Activision loses employees"

The video game development cycle is also a hell world of terrible planning and budget goals, most projects are wildly expensive when they don't need to be (Tim Schafer and his $$$ spent on famous celebs for voice acting instead of making a good game) or mismanaged to the point where "crunch time" is seen as a feature of the business when it means work yourself to death for 3 months because the game must be finished on time and we wasted the last 9 because decision makers kept changing their minds.

Here's a relevant example

rope kid posted:

Interplay was entering The Dying Time and Black Isle had two (IIRC) games in production: Torn (RIP) and The Black Hound (RIP later). I was the lead designer on the latter.

Torn had a lot of difficulties but was still in pre-production/vertical slice (again IIRC, this was almost 20 years ago). But Interplay needed money ASAP, so they canceled Torn and suspended The Black Hound in order to work on IWD2. Feargus, Parker, and Darren Monahan took me and Steve Bokkes into (again IIRC) Parker's office and Feargus said (though he remembers differently) hey we need to make IWD2. We need you and Steve to write the story and basic area overviews in the next two days and we need the game done in four months.

I was like cool, never going to happen. Steve and I worked on that story together, he left shortly after and I became the lead designer on IWD2. Unsurprisingly, four months became nine and eventually ten.

But anyway, just because it was a crash grab by Interplay doesn't mean that we didn't try our best to make it good and cool. It's just hard to do when you're under the gun like that. Then again, that sort of experience was the norm for me for the first 10 years I was in the industry.
