Without a huge chunk of people on furlough, unemployed, or working from home you wouldn't have the level of manpower to mobilise long term.

The other thing is that general strikes and protests have historically petered out when people eventually ran out of ways to sustain themselves and were essentially forced back into work. With no jobs to go back to for many many people this won't be anywhere near as strong a factor in the US this time.

[edit] 1919 was the year of the Homestead strike which was carefully picked apart in part by setting workers against each other and stoking racial tensions to break up solidarity between workers.

I'm horrified by the prospect of C-19 having a resurgance in the coming days, but it's going to occur for the best of causes, and the way the world works simply doesn't allow humans to defer our anger and let it out with the same intensity in, say, six months time.

It sucks badly, but I don't see an alternative.

We're getting a second wave regardless and these protests are generally happening where the response has already been poo poo. It's definitely making it worse but the people protesting are the ones who've been left to die.

yes, it will kill them, but the wrong is with the system that makes their protest necessary, that puts in them the need to be out there fighting for their futures, and for all our futures. They know they're at risk which is why they're wearing masks, but they're there anyway because they see no other option.

You're acting like it's the people at the protest taking the biggest risk. It's not, it's the vulnerable people they'll spread the virus to.

That's why the whole thing makes me so uneasy. It's one thing to say you'll face down a rubber bullet or policeman's boot for your cause, that's putting your life on the line. It's another to say that other people have to lay down their lives, especially when you're talking about groups like the old, the disabled and the already ill.

A guilty pleasure of mine is reading Mumsnet and PistonHeads on my lunch break at work. It’s an often amusing and sometimes infuriating insight into a totally different mindset.

What always gets me about PistonHeads is how the prevailing attitude amongst gammons when another black person gets murdered by the police is “well if they followed the law they’d have nothing to worry about would they?!”

Curiously this attitude does not apply when they get stung with a speeding fine.

There was some info released in the US a day or two ago stating that the risk factors were much higher for travelling to/from a protest location than in being at the site itself. I don't have the info to hand, just saw a tweet in passing.

Risk of infection doesn't work that way, the risk of an activity is always the same regardless of what other activities you might be doing.

For example, I work in the NHS so going to work is by far my biggest infection risk. But when I go to the supermarket that doesn't mean I'm at less risk of catching Covid there than anybody else. The absolute risk is the same for me, its only low relative to my other risks.

If anything mass gatherings will have a synergistic effect on the infection rate from public transport use, and vice versa, since that's what happens in an exponential growth system.

And again I don't blame people for protesting, it just makes me feel uncomfortable that the protests will have a body count and it will largely be composed of vulnerable people who did not attend the protest.

That book is quoting William Styron's "The Confessions of Nat Turner", which is pretty racist and puts the words "an unspeakable bootlicking Sambo" in Turner's mouth about one of his fellow revolutionaries, which is very lovely but also straightforwardly the modern use of the term (especially given that it was written in 1967). This doesn't really help with your issue, but there really doesn't seem to be anything there.

It's ok, Keir is going to work out how to become Electable by taking a representative sample of the kind of people who call into LBC

quote:

Starmer to host regular monthly LBC phone-in

Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, is going to host a regular monthly phone-in on LBC. It will last half an hour and the first one will go out on Monday, at 9am. It will be called Call Keir and Nick Ferrari will be presenting for LBC.

In doing the programme Starmer will be following in the footsteps of Boris Johnson, who held a monthly phone-in on the station when he was London mayor, and Nick Clegg, who did a weekly one when he was deputy PM.

In a statement Starmer said:

I’m very conscious that one of my first jobs is to rebuild trust in the Labour party with the public. The best way of doing that is to listen to the public and to LBC’s listeners and hear what they’ve got to say. What I always get from these phone-ins is a real sense of what matters to people. Having people on, telling me what they think, is the only way to gauge what people think and to hear what their real concerns are. I’m looking forward to it.

The slightest touch from a Gol-Shogeg will result in Instant Death!
I'm in two minds about that. On the one hand LBC is a pile of unutterable horseshit that has hosted Farage for most of a decade (and continues to do so?).

On the other hand, actually speaking to the general public on one of the better-known platforms for engaging with politics, and providing a less right-wing voice than any they've had before, has a chance to do something non-poo poo if Keir does it right.

I'm not holding out any of the h-word, but I think on balance it's more likely to do more good than forensically getting brayed at at PMQs and getting COVID as a result.

LBC is dedicated to striking a balance between the two sides of political debate: frothing Nazis and right-of-centre-right liberals. They occasionally have good opinions, but they make up for it by regularly platforming the wrong people.
