Concrete roofs, high-ceiling garages without a door and a single bathroom in a two story building are highly unusual for Germany.

What do you want to do? Who do you want to be?

Someone made a great travel guide website about it too.
quote:
Norilsk Russia: Travel Guide To The World's Most Northerly City!
Happiness and Sunshine
Norilsk sits atop a lush green landscape, bathed in oxygen rich, clean arctic air. Thick forest and dense grasses spread out in each direction for hundreds of miles. Thousands of species of plant and animal live together in multi-biological harmony. Seeds that blow in from afar are lucky to sprout here, in the pure black soil of Krasnoyarski-Krai.
Health and Beauty
For over a hundred years Norilsk has attracted Soviet tourists with its pristine natural surroundings. They come to bathe in geothermal spas, inner tube off of waterfalls and suntan on the pristine shores of the Arctic Ocean. Mineral rich waters and pure air adds longevity to all those who live here. Many Norilsk natives are well into their 100s. Some are believed to be over 150 years old! Unfortunately their birth records were lost during the chaos of the Russo-Manchurian war.
Tolstoy's Russia
Hundreds of westerners visit Norilsk, and their numbers grow following every season. Norilsk's distance from populated areas is the only reason it has not become more popular than Cancun, Aruba or Ibiza. This has advantages! Traditional Russian culture is slowly disappearing from glitzy cities like Magnitogorsk. In Norilsk you will find "The Real Russia" that Pushkin and Tolstoi wrote about.
Norilsk Nickel Peoples' Mining Concern
Adequate global supplies of nickel ensure that important household items such as hydrogenated vegetable oil and green tinted glass are economically viable to produce. Hero workers of Norilsk descend miles deep into the earth's crust in search of the world's most valuable metal. Above ground the mined source rock is crushed and smelted in a wholly carbon neutral process. So clean is waste ore that it is used as a garden fertilizer and colon cleansing tonic. Nickel mining in Norilsk not only serves the needs of global heavy industry, but also acts as a steward of the environment.
Pristine Nature
Be sure to visit Norilsk in early spring, when wild flowers and cherry trees go into full bloom. The sight is awe inspiring to the point of collapsing in tears of joy!
People
The kindness of the people of Norilsk knows no boundaries.
Norilsk smelter operators drink tea and discuss philosophy after hard days work
Angels and Saints
The people of Norilsk are saints not yet canonized. Long hours of work in nickel mines bring them a modest paycheck, much of which is donated to charity. If you ever decide to visit the city of Norilsk, there is no need to bring food or money. A Norilsk smelter operator would give his last potato to a hungry traveler.
Peace and Tolerance
Not a single criminal can be found here. Those who do arrive with a checkered past are so amazed by the kindness and beauty of Norilsk’s inhabitants that they themselves are set straight. Not a single act of crime has been committed within the last one hundred years.
Love and Sharing
Doors are never locked and during the summer months are left wide open. Residents of an apartment building are free to eat from each others refrigerator, sit on their couch and watch television. If a large sum of money is found under the homeowner's mattress, it may be taken, then returned, or not, it doesn’t matter.
Norilskites are not bothered by the trivial pursuit of wealth accumulation. To the decadent Westerner, these feats of human kindness seem impossible, like something out of a science-fiction workers' utopia novel. In Norilsk it is reality. The people of Norilsk live on a higher plane of consciousness, one of boundless love and sharing.
Diversity and Multiculturalism
Immigrants arrive in Norilsk from all over the former Soviet Union and the world. After the 2008 financial crisis, thousands of American refugees fled to Norilsk in search of a better life and a piece of the Russian Dream. Most live on the west side of town in what has become a vibrant immigrant community. They are free to carry on the corporate holiday traditions of their homeland with no fear of persecution from their Russian hosts. The Superbowl, Valentines Day, Wrestlemania and Easter Breakfast at McDonalds are celebrated with no less intensity and zeal.
Norilsk Is The Most Resource Rich City On Earth
Nickel Copper Zinc Lead Tin Platinum Palladium Gold Silver
Beneath Norilsk lays the richest polymetallic ore on Earth. Deposits are found at depth, in ancient veins, the now cold, hardened passageways of volcanic magma. Miners dug these passageways of mineral wealth for nearly a century and have barely dented proven reserves. Grades below are so high and voluminous, they enriched the surface soil hundreds of meters above.
Over half a billion years, by the simple process of osmosis, some metallic particles migrated to the surface. In nearly all underground discoveries, minuscule concentrations are found in top soil, measuring just parts per billion, but are a useful for identifying drill targets. Norilsk's top soil contains enough metal to be dug up by hand, put in a wheelbarrow, smelted, and sold at a profit! Given the city's high salaries and generous benefits, no one must stoop to the desperate pursuit of artisanal mining. Residents prefer to plant gardens, then eat the over-sized mineral rich vegetables that sprout from the black, glittering soil of their beloved Norilsk.
Abu Dhabi of the North
Hyper inflation of the Greenspan-Bernanke biumverate transformed Norilsk into an ATM machine, whose smelters churn out billions in hard, non-fiat currency every day. Whether the world's central banks print money or not, production in Norilsk shall continue at an industry record profit margin. Ore grades are so high that mines operate economically even during times of catastrophically low commodity prices. The 2008 base metals crash bankrupted many resource companies around the world, but mining in Norilsk remained profitable despite nickel, copper and zinc plunging 70%.
In most countries, greedy corporations strip every resource, pay out bonuses to the connected elite, and leave behind an uninhabitable wasteland. Not so in Norilsk. The underground riches of Norilsk gush (not trickle) *up* to every level of its social strata. Enormous tax surpluses allow city planners to build infrastructure on an epic scale. Monuments to culture are sprouting alongside freshly paved, pothole free, cobblestone streets. By referendum, the hero workers of Norilsk voted for construction of art galleries, opera houses, globe theaters and multi-faith houses of worship - a direct reflection of the tolerant, cultured masses who reside in the world's most northerly city.
One Billion Acres Of Natural Beauty Surrounds Norilsk
Green and Clean
So clean, blue and transparent is the air above Norilsk that when standing on tippy toes Sarah Palin can be seen just above the horizon. The virgin fields surrounding Norilsk are awash in flora and fauna. More bio-diversity is entrenched here than in the Amazon basin. Vast seas of green are visible in every direction. Smells of a million flower species saturate the air in a chorus of aromatherapy. Local mosquitos are so happy they drink the sap of daisies rather than blood.
The Arctic Shore
Like its sister cities Monaco, Cancun, Miami and Rio De Janeiro, Norilsk is only steps away from a gorgeous, crystal blue ocean. Hundreds of miles of white sand beaches are shared by polite beach goers and hummingbirds. Dolphins swim near the coast as lifeguards, saving children who venture too far. On the shores of Norilsk you will find only high culture and civility. There are no casinos, brothels, crack houses, mafia or hypodermic needles. You may sit without looking.
Polar Bears and Baby Seals
In the West, in supposed democratic, tolerant countries, baby seals are clubbed to death in a murderous frenzy. Polar bears are hunted for sport. In Norilsk, people and animals live as one, enjoying the same rights and priviledges endowed by their creator.
Norilsk Weather Is Ideal For a Family Vacation
Sun and Fun
Summer in Norilsk is hot and dry. Temperatures average well into the 90s, and humidity rarely exceeds 20%. In American cities, walking under such heat would cause sunburn and eventually skin cancer. Throughout the 1980s, mass quantities of CFCs were sprayed to prop up vertical hairstyles, ruining skies above. Due to strict Russian environmental controls, and the popularity of water combed mullets, a healthy ozone layer floats above Norilsk, blocking out all ultra violet rays. You may walk the cobblestone streets day and night, dressed only in European speedos, skin glistening with baby oil under the polar sun.
White Nights
While the rest of the world huddles in darkness, Norilsk bathes in 23 hours per day of sunshine. Plants have a near unlimited supply of photons to drive photosynthesis. Fruits and vegetables grow to enourmous sizes in half the time. Due to high levels of Vitamin D coursing through the blue blood of Norilsk's hero workers, their legs are straighter and mood gayer than the mole people of lower latitudes who endure ten to twelve hours of cimmerian shade.

what if there were trains that could run on top of other trains
like on the front and back of every train there would be a ramp with rails on it and the rails would continue along the top of the train
so if another train came up behind it it could just keep going and run right over the first train and everybody would be happy
somebody get me elon musk!
i think thats a thing in the new snowpiercer show, theres some sort of quick travel tube system along the train
EDIT: lmao this was from like 10 pages ago oops

I’m quite fond of the old manufacturing videos on youtube, but I always make the mistake of looking in the comments and seeing some moron going “ahuahuehue no saftey narzis then, no goggles then, that’s when men were men” and then a heap of other idiots pile in to inform each other that we made things in the past because factories didn’t have to waste money on lavatories for women and it goes on and on and on.
But! I was surprised in this rather good “Airscrew Manufacturing” film to see someone wearing what looks like a dust mask. He’s at about 6:55, using a fine polisher. The rest of his PPE is still wool and brylcreem, and nobody else has one, but I do wonder what the story is there - did he have a lung condition or something? Paris v Stepney only established in 1951 that people at greater risk had to be better protected (it’s a long and silly as well as depressing story), so I can’t imagine it’d have come up in 1940.

Safety culture is built on top of a pile of corpses, but also standing on the shoulders of the one person who cared. PPE has existed since tools, we've just had a bad relationship with engraining it into the task for everyone.
