I love a conspiracy theory as much as anyone but when you google "bellingcat CIA" the top results are just people talking about it on forums like it's a given. Is there some smoking gun that I missed or is it just inferred from the reporting they do? I do remember listening to their MH17 podcast and wondering how they got recordings of the Russian military...

Brown Moses started doing some ok tracking of weapons in Syria because he was bored on the forums. His blog got semi-popular and ended up working with some journalists. This ended up with him discovering a CIA/Gulf weapons supply rat-line from the Balkans to Syrian rebels. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/mar/21/frontroom-blogger-analyses-weapons-syria-frontline Now, about a year after that story comes out, he has enough support and funding to launch Bellingcat, an organization almost exclusively focused on official enemies of the US and UK. It seems to me that he got a bunch of funding with strings attached for what it could be used on, and he accepted it without question. Easiest way to make sure he isn't an issue and to make him useful to Western imperialism. As far as I can tell Brown Moses and Bellingcat don't make stuff up, it's a way to produce mostly true propaganda. They seem like a scrappy indie news outlet, so stuff they put out is more believable than if a NATO thinktank produced it. Like, they wrote a lot about barrel bombs being a uniquely cruel weapon of war, which is believable until you realize that Western countries only have "smart" bombs because they invest more money in developing weapons of war than they do on healthcare. There was a controversy around the OPCW's actions in Syria, which I got extremely bored following, but Bellingcat seemed to get humiliated by the end of it. Also, it seems pretty evident that UK intelligence leaked info on the Skripal poisoning though Bellingcat for some plausible deniability. the big takeaway from this is if you use wikipedia to ID weapons in warzones, you too may uncover a CIA op in progress.

i think he said his funders don't tell him what to cover but IMO they always do. they're not just giving money away for free y'all like you get a grant to cover X over the course of the year and you develop a plan to show to the funders. now that might be pretty loose and general but it's all pretty shady.

I've been like 3 months behind on podcasts due to lack of train+walk commuting and having a hard time listening to them on a pc. finally got pocketcasts premium so i could use a non dog-poo poo web player, and pirated Snowrunner and been using that as a podcast game on the rec of dead gay comedy forujms. it's real good and would highly recommend for anyone else behind on pod stuff. for some reason i just find it hard to sit down in a chair and listen to them, and i can't really read or do forum stuff while they're playing, but this game works well hauling big cargo poo poo while episodes play. i've just been working backwards and god drat nick's corona takes back in april were awful, but it's also kinda funny going back to just quaint march news-happenings and being like 'wow that was like 10 years ago'. truaenon as always and and latest chapos have been excellent but some of their post super-tuesday stuff has sucked and i had to skip a lot of it. now i've got some tillbillys to do and i think i'll be caught up.
