When the UK switched from 240V to 230V to harmonize with the Continent, all that was actually done was the official tolerances in the ESQCR changed from 240V -10%/+6% to 230V -6%/+10%.

I guess the physical sciences are the closest to forming a logical step, because you're doing lab work and writing reports in a similar method to what you will later do, but the levels of expected data analysis are very different.

Which reminds me of the best undergrad lab report ever.

Ha! My lab partner and I spent our compulsory lab hours (we were theoreticians) checking the theory, doing one result to get a ball park and making up the rest of the results within what we felt were acceptable error bar limits (and got great marks). The one and only time we actually did the experiment in its entirety and submitted an accurate lab report we got marked down. Never again.
Thankfully we were able to drop labs entirely from the second year of our degrees but then we had the computers ICL 1900 series and punched cards and that dreadful moment when you drop the entire pack of punched cards on the floor never to be sorted again.

Glorious.

It has been heartening to see some public names and bodies being on the right side when it comes to the events in Bristol. Alice Roberts may have been a less-than-useful uni tutor but she knows where to stand when it comes to statues of slave traders and all the people coming to her on twitter hoping for a Famous Face to hangwring about it.

I think the right-wing talking points bot has spewed up a new angle, because I'm suddenly seeing lots of 'concerned citizens' saying that pulling down the statue was racist because the statue was made of black gunmetal, they used a rope (so it looked like a lynching!) and most of the 'baying mob' were white. :psyduck:

Edit:

Thanks! :)

It isn't, it's just that the 'valid' history that needs to be preserved in aspic is the one that the people saying this are more comfortable with. Or (more charitably) it lets them come up with reasons not to confront the history they know would be uncomfortable to deal with.

Incidentally, I'm pretty sure that when the Colston statue was erected in the 1890s it was not without controversy, and there were op-eds in the local papers wondering if it was really a good look for a city that, after all, was also a centre of the Abolition Movement and even the late-Victorians could baulk at lauding a literal slave-trader. I think that's one of the reasons why the inscription makes zero mention of how Colston came by his money.

I'll try and find a source, but it might be a useful fact to drop into any discussions.

Possibly (I haven't fully absorbed the article yet):

https://www.brh.org.uk/site/articles/myths-within-myths/
(Article was written in 2018)

quote:

Edward Colston and that statue By Roger Ball

In the light of recent moves to place a ‘corrective’ plaque on the statue of Edward Colston in the centre of Bristol and calls for it to be removed to a museum[1] it seems the time is right to investigate the origins of this monument and the claim emblazoned on it that it was:

Erected by citizens of Bristol as a memorial of one of the most virtuous and wise sons of their city

Looking into the history of the statue demonstrates the same myth making that has characterised the popular memory of Colston in Bristol (until very recently).

etc lots of etc

perhaps everyone knows this after the events of yesterday but i didn't and it's worth repeating.

i always assumed these statues were contemporaneous or near enough, but they were actually mostly put up in the period shortly before WW1 during the first wave of end of empire panic, to inspire a new generation to go out and conquer. Robert Clive died in 1774 but his statue in Whitehall wasn't erected until 1912. It's almost almost perfectly analogous to the daughters of the confederacy putting up cheap statues of confederate generals everywhere in the south during the civil rights protests in the 1960s.

The thing with Clive was that no one was going to build a statue for him immediately after his death - he was reviled in Britain as much as he had his defenders and there multiple protracted attempts to impeach and reprimand him and his contemporaries for blatant misrule and open looting. When he apparently committed suicide many people said good he should have topped himself the fucker.

The lasting legacy of Clive as the arch-nabob of the company was Pitt seizing control of the company and the beginning of a shift towards direct administration of India to prevent people like him from existing again

It's practically impossible to defend having a statue of him for any reason
