al-azad posted:I'm working on a video game adaption of I Spit On Your Grave where you learn via a series of notes that your rapists are misunderstood family men frustrated at a patriarchal system that does not support them but they lack the language to understand and express that frustration. You discover this after an unskippable QTE where you cut their penis off and force feed it to them but I really want the player to question their actions like "why the gently caress did I pay $60 for this garbage?" finally games are art Dewgy posted:I too hate video games, they are bad. ![]()

Stux posted:i dont think glorifying is the right word if its all meant to be framed as "this sucks" If you do good in a combat sequence, you are rewarded with a gory animation where you cut someone's achilles tendon and then stab them in the throat when they fall. The visceral enjoyment of the violence is what they're pushing as a significant part of the appeal of the game.

Botolo is in the itch bundle and it loving SLAPS. It's a 2d topdown king of the hill based competitive/fighting game that is all about footsies and hard reads, talking emphasis off of executing nuclear launch commands so there's less of a barrier for entry for someone new to the game to get up to the level of someone who's played it before.

Violence is extremely cool, aesthetically speaking. This is one thing I'd expect anybody who plays video games to agree on.

homeless snail posted:big disagree, mechanics are all games have. there's a huge difference in impact in watching a recording of something oppressive happening in a video game and actively participating in it and having a great time doing the atrocities because it's a mirror polished half billion dollar AAA game This is why I am going to watch a LP of TLOU2 instead of actually playing it. Also I don't have a PS4.

It's interesting because some people do think that violence and conflict are the only languages people respond to, but every study directly contradicts this. People respond to the ability to affect the game. It doesn't matter if you're shooting a realistic assault rifle into an unarmed person, or throwing candy at animals. What you're responding to is the fact that your actions are changing the game.

Will you even be able to watch a Lets Play of TLOUSP2? The game sounds like it is so horrifically violent that it wouldn't get pass Youtubes auto censors.

The visceral enjoyment of the violence is what they're pushing as a significant part of the appeal of the game. the combat is avoidable with stealth and the violence is meant to make you not want to kill, thats been clear. they could absolutely ham fist it and do it badly and it is druckman, but the message of "its bad" has been clear. the reason games usually sanitise violence is to make it enjoyable to do, the reason you would depict it more viscerally is to make it off putting. you dont make npcs scream out for their friends to make it more fun to kill someone in a game. homeless snail posted:big disagree, mechanics are all games have. there's a huge difference in impact in watching a recording of something oppressive happening in a video game and actively participating in it and having a great time doing the atrocities because it's a mirror polished half billion dollar AAA game this essentialist view of media has never been useful, its the same impulse that would lead someone to declare cinema verite as the only pure form of a movie as the cinematography is what seperates it from other mediums. a game is more than just mechanics, it is an amalgamation of its parts and its completely valid to have different games focus on different areas, and in refusing parts can make a point. a clear example would be depression quest purposefully removing the "mechanics" of the game as it progresses to force the player to deal with the realities of people who suffer from depression, and who may not be able to make certain choices that are available to others. mandating that any art/media form must fit strict criteria is pointlessly limiting and narrows the ability for people to express themselves in their work.

The Last Of Us 2 is a product, and they are marketing it because they want people to buy it. The trailers haven't shown people sneakily avoiding combat and violence, they've shown some amount of sneaking that always ends in violence. The sneaking creates tension, the violence is release of that tension. That is the experience they are selling.

On the flipside, there's probably some people out there that will welcome TLOU2's nihilistic approach and violent content as cathartic during... this moment in time. I'm definitely not one of them but I'm sure they exist (and I bet Sony folks are crossing all available fingers).

The game is called Spooky Ghosts Dot Com and in it you defeat ghosts and monsters and also pet cats. I don't think petting the cats unlocks anything but it is nice to do.
