With all this testing of hard, are you all going to tell Petroglyph about it?

I imagine the testers were already hardcore C&C fans to begin with and played so much during testing they were able to overcome the Hard mode with their micro but who has that time? Struggling to find a reason why it would be so unbalanced otherwise.

The hard mode negates hard counters, if anything it should make hard counters the way to win. Instead its just about if you can overcome a meatgrinder before the tiberium runs out.

On normal, yeah.

On hard, I don't know if it's actually possible to kill the south shore turrets without airstriking them first, which means clearing the Nod base out first and not getting the chinook.

The base isn't too hard to hit with engineers after clearing out the defensive group since the con yard is on the opposite side of the Hand of Nod. It still takes forever since the turrets take a ridiculous amount of firepower just to punch through the repairing, and the AI cheats and will keep training infantry even if the harvester isn't harvesting. The south shore turrets are the problem.

I recommend changing the hard difficulty as I detailed here. I just did GDI mission 9 and was able to kill the turrets without resorting to air strikes.

Conclusion
I recommend the following settings for a more "fair" Hard mode:

code:
				<Key>Hard</Key>
				<Value>
					<Firepower>0.9</Firepower>
					<Groundspeed>0.9</Groundspeed>
					<Airspeed>0.9</Airspeed>
					<BuildTime>1.0</BuildTime>
					<Armor>1.0</Armor>
					<ROF>1.1</ROF>
					<Cost>1.0</Cost>
					<RepairDelay>0.05</RepairDelay>
					<BuildDelay>0.1</BuildDelay>
					<BuildSlowdown>true</BuildSlowdown>
					<DestroyWalls>false</DestroyWalls>
					<ContentScan>false</ContentScan>
				</Value>

Yes absolutely it's worth it. They are very good games that hold up well especially with all the quality of life improvements they've backported.

It doesn't really negate it, you just need to bring even more of it. Other options will still be even worse.

Problem is the game doesn't even give you the tech tree to use the counters in half of the missions, so it's already a suboptimal slog, and it's not really very well balanced, so a lot of the counters aren't very effective in the first place (i.e. rocket troops are almost always a waste of money, unless you're a filthy cheater AI that doesn't pay for them).

The normal difficulty is already "hard" by most RTS standards.

In Nod 9: Reinforce Egypt can I give the computer a higher value target than the commando to napalm? Seeing the mission in C&C 95 on Youtube they always go for flame throwers instead, but that's not happening for me.

Besides functionality issues RA2 seems to hold up quite well grahically speaking, excluding the vehicles. Tiberian Sun really could use a remaster.

Essence is great. I kinda dislike CNC3's visual style and the way they got rid of mechs so that mod is really my preferred way to play that game. Apparently the latest version is kinda buggy tho and most people play with 1.6, though that does mean no Forgotten faction.

The Kane's Wrath expansion brought back mechs and a bunch of cyborgs as well IIRC

edit: I forgot how mundane the armies are in the first two games. I guess I got used to the continual ramping up of crazy poo poo in each subsequent title.

I booted up Tiberian Sun last night (from The First Decade) and holy crap its borderline unplayable. Every unit looks like an ant and it's impossible to tell what's going on.

I imagine the games from Generals onward are less of an issue because they're true 3D and you can zoom the map.

You can use GPU scaling, just play it at 1024x768 and have your GPU scale it to your monitors resolution, ideally without stretch.

If you're using the cncnet loader or ddraw.dll replacements make sure you play it in something like 1280x720

Scaling up to 1920x1080 or greater makes things too tiny for me

gently caress the final Soviet mission. You get killed unless you rush subs and know not to build on the east side of the island

Also a final gently caress you to the small cliff area in the top right full of aa guns and bunkers when Soviets have no way to get to it aside from paratroopers

Found my old C&C strategy guide from storage for a read and to help with a mission or two. Its great with all the little bits backstory and world building written in it. As a bonus it has stuck on the inside and backside covers, printouts of GDI and NOD bases made in their respective final missions. I must of done this back around 1998 or 1999. Must have had a bit of free time time on my hands with the base layouts and that I had both sides construction yards at my disposal.

I'm having fun with experimenting with some of the mods.

The one that let's you zoom in or out to many order of magnitudes more is a great one. Not only does it help give you a better birds eye view of the battlefield, if you zoom in, you can see loads of crazy details.

Like how the Recon Cycles have the driver modled and viewable. Or how the Chem Troopers wear little gas masks and gloves unlike the Flame Troopers.

I'd recommend going into the Workshop for the game and downloading them.

The mod for soldiers to fist fight also looks hillarious.

Having now finished the Nod and GDI, the one thing that I didn’t like some were the Commando/small units with no base missions, and I remember those were the ones I had the most trouble with back in the day. It’s a lot of trail and error (Also save scumming) for some of them, but the difficult slider on TD made them more tolerable. Not gonna lie, I think I did most of those on Casual.

Also, for those who finished the GDI campaign, which ending did you get? I thought finishing the temple with the ion cannon got Kane vaporized at the end, but I got one with him getting hit by a ton of bricks that I don’t remember at all...

Finally, add me to the list wanting Tiberian Sun & RA2 remasters ASAP. Both of those were great, and I loved the post-apocalyptic/cyberpunk-ish at points look of TS so much.

Which of the Nod 13 Mission is actually the easiest?

Left gives you enough tiberium for a starting base but sandwiches you between 2 missile gunboat rivers.
Middle seems to want you to migrate your MCV somewhere else but the starting force is terrible
Right seems to be a gimmick where you have to build your mcv/hand of nod in a remote location then capture a base using commando & engineers.

Tib Dawn was so my jam growing up. I played the hell out of the game. It had been out for a year or two when I got it on my P60 for the princely sum of £40 in the old Virgin Megastore in Dublin.
I remember splitting the cost of it with a friend of mine, each taking one of the CD’s to instal the game and we each played through the Single Player Campaign. (My brother and I got the GDI disc. He got the Nod. Then after two weeks we had finished the campaign and swapped.)
We got the Covert Ops later, but that was only £15. So I didn’t feel too bad that it was just an add-on.

When Red Alert came out, I was likewise hugely into it. I also remember going to an Internet Cafe just to be able to play LAN games against my brother. Again my friend and I split the costs. He played the Allies for the first two weeks, we played Soviets.

But it was the Add On packs for Red Alert that killed my love for the series for a while. I read all the previews for the first one (Counterstrike I think.) I saved my money, couldn’t wait to play it.

Then I get it and discovered it was just a set of random missions like the Covert Ops. But no new single player story. And that you couldn’t even use the new unitis in skirmish or multiplayer.
I was so annoyed at the time that I even wrote a letter (a physical letter) to Westwood complaining about it.
It soured my enjoyment that I never played the next add on or the Console ports.

So far I’ve just been playing Tib Dawn, but I am wondering how Red Alert will hold up on nostalgia.

Yeah, ion cannon gives you Kane stretching his arms wide as he faces the approaching beam. Anything else gets you the debris-burial version you saw. I guess either you screwed it up somehow (shell hit after the beam before the temple finished exploding?) or you hit a bug because I was definitely able to get both.

IIRC the ion cannon version is the generally accepted "canon" ending to TD.

Despite looking harder, I found the right the easiest. You should be able to hop the river and take the small Comms Center base with ease and once you do that your Construction Yard is safe and you can expand with ease.

That might have been it, as I think there was a silo or a power plant left. I know for sure the Ion cannon was the last thing to hit it, as I’d been hitting it first with Orcas and called them off, gave it a second or two to be sure nothing else was coming in, and then fired the ion cannon. I think I saved shortly before that, so I’ll try it again later and see what happens...
