Pretty much, yes.

I'm having a bunch of fun with Forza Horizon 4. I love that you can bring almost any car to an event and face an appropriate lineup. If I bring a muscle car, I face other muscle cars. Bring a slow Class D car and your opponents will too.

Other stuff:
Racing is a fun blend of arcadey and precision
Modding cars is fun
Variety of cars, side jobs, and race types is great
Steady stream of new cars and gear
Downloading custom tune-ups and paint schemes is super easy
In fact, once you get a feel for the million little components, almost everything is easy and intuitive. Compared to Gran Turismo, with its endless loading screens and millions of sub menus, Forza is very refreshing.

Just really having a good time with it

As a gamer, the FF7 remake is gorgeous and deserves every accolade it gets but as a purist I have to go with the original FF7 for its overall importance to the gaming world, making RPGs a household genre and Tifa Lockharts trademark Huge Breasts woefully absent in the inferior remake

There still is some pressure. Time flows with the Command Menu up, just very slowly. You've also got to have at least some reflexes and coordination to pull off the dodging and blocking and targeting that the better players out there do in their videos.

You can press the touchpad at any point during battle to completely pause the fight and investigate enemy stats.

True. Splitting hairs for me to think of "consider moves" meaning going through the menus and characters.

I hope this makes sense, but I always think of JRPGs especially as being much more about difficulty in preparation and understanding, rather than difficulty in execution. Basically, the hard part is figuring out what to do, not doing it. Which is really good for me because I can step back and figure out a plan of attack really well, I'm just dogshit at precise timing and complex executions.

So yeah, the 7 remake can't really be tempered into a game I like, because they injected it with a bunch of the stuff I really don't want. FFXIII-3 very nearly turned me off the whole game right at the end because of it; the final boss has a move that requires block timing more precise than the entire rest of the game (which mostly didn't care), and I just couldn't do it.

But since I'm largely tired of being negative in the positive thread, I'll highlight some recent goodness in that area. While Fire Emblem is still having trouble finding its feet difficulty-wise in a landscape where their old tricks don't work, I really like that Three Houses' approach to making challenging maps isn't to make numbers big, but to pull unique tricks that mess with a natural approach. You usually need to go out of your way to stop or avoid a big, present danger in the map, and while it does make the rest of the map easier if you do, you probably ended up in a very awkward spot or with some units wildly out of position, and you need to plan for THAT.

That's exactly what the FF7 Remake is though. The outcome of a fight depends far more on your materia and weapon setup than any ability you have to dodge, because you can slowdown or pause the game at any time. Enemy special moves are called out at least a full second in advance with text over their heads.

Trying to read enemy movements doesn't actually even work against the tougher enemies because dodging has no iframes and you'll get hit. Instead you just look at the move and you can always pause or slowdown and think "hmm, how do I get out of this ability, oh right I have Counterstance I should use that".

the umbra faction is super great especially, focusing on making little tiny sacrificial creatures (morsels) that feed and buff your other creatures. the morsels are loving adorable and hold their buff as an item over their heads and say poo poo like "HERE TO SERVE" and it's just great

This game is excellent, and I was puzzled why it hasn't been received as enthusiastically as it should have.

I think it has something to do with the title and promotional graphics/copy. If you had never read a review or a recommendation for it and you just stumbled on it in a list, it looks a LOT like a lovely mobile game in the storefront.

While we're talking about ff7r, I enjoyed the late game part a lot where Tifa and aeris buddied it up and made fun of clouds complete inability to deal with women. It was funny seeing them actually calling him out for being a bit of a weirdo about it, instead of the usual anime rpg tropes.

In the end I was pleasantly surprised that most people in the game were actually pretty normal people.

I'm playing Wandersong after that earlier post about it got me curious. I like that as you collect pieces of the Earthsong you are collecting different aspects of music in general, like one involves getting the right pitch via matching sine-wave frequencies and one is a Drumbeat to set the tempo.

I like that Cloud being awkward around the ladies was made into a character trait instead of just being a gag. The guy is really messed up inside, he has a very bad history with getting closer to people, I don't blame him for wanting to keep people distant but not really knowing how.

I really like that the only person he speaks full sentences to is Tifa, the one person he's known since he was a kid. Some of his longest compete sentences in the whole game are when you're hanging out with her in the slums right after the intro sequence. The game doesn't just tell you they're old friends, YOU can tell they are because Cloud is comfortable around her and no one else.

The writing and characterization in ff7r is just fantastic. They did SO MUCH with a game that originally gave you just the bare minimum with regards to dialogue.

FF7 and 8 were better about characterization and detail than a lot of people, even Square in their later materials, give them credit for. One moment from 7 that's really good is when you visit Nibelheim and cloud tells the party about the last time he was there and the whole time Tifa is really, really confused because she genuinely didn't know Cloud had been there at all, doubly so since he's cheating and retelling it from the position of Zack - and the way these things all slide into place during the big revelation near the end works really well for both characters. But for some reason a lot of people tend to just conflate Cloud and Squall together as "the silent broody guy who says whatever a lot".

I've been playing the .hack//GU games since the Last Recode edition was in a bundle, and probably my favorite part of the game is the forum. A lot of it feels very 'real', and I enjoy seeing people discuss the game and world events, and also trying to make sense of the weird stuff happening that they know even less about than me.

My favorite part though is that there's a side activity where you get a list of infamous PKers to kill, and when you get them all a thread comments on the bounty list getting cleared out.

Now, the first game starts (after the tutorial anyway) with your character already having a reputation as this weirdo that's been going around for months killing PKers left and right while looking for someone called Tri-Edge, so one of the responses when they find out you were the one to kill all those big-name PKers is that they're more surprised it took you so long to start on the bounty hunt quest.

I'm just disappointed that other competitive side-activities don't get forum comments for acing them, but it's still cool.

Amateur games (like SC) using CryEngine are great for the "what parts of the default project didn't they remove" game. Usually it's stuff like seeing the nanosuit screen effects if you fall from a great height (or the nanosuit itself if you use the console to go into third person), what I remember specifically about SC is that they made the water invisible but couldn't delete it outright, so going below a certain depth would change your movement physics and add floating air bubble decals to your vision

Just to be clear, that's going below a certain "depth" (aka the 0-plane) in a space combat game. Even better, the air bubbles unexpectedly coming out of mouths appeared in trailers and cutscenes, including the big dramatic .:911: in the intro.

CIG would be funny if they hadn't somehow raised so much money.

How about giving them a go instead of writing them all off because you haven't heard of them before?

However for the 'gently caress, 1400+ new things in my library?' people:
1: The bundled files are in a list you can access from my purchases / bundles.
2: To avoid flooding people's libraries, the titles only get moved to your library once you grab/download them.

So only the things you're interested in/install get dropped into your library.
The only thing that's kinda annoying is that you can only search by title in the bundle list, so I had a hard time finding some of the games where I wasn't sure what the name was.

I think it all comes down to expectations- if you don't know what itch.io is and the kind of community they have built up then yeah you are going to have a bad time. But if you go in with the right mindset- that these largely one person team games are people donating thier work to this bundle then you are going to appreciate how wierd and enjoyable they can be.
