Also Korea, I think it's been covered ITT before but budae-jigae is a salty spicy broth made with cured meats like salami and spam and it translates to "army base stew" because the ingredients were distributed from foreign army bases.

A new Chinese MRE got eaten by Steve, and so far, no reports of diarrhoea. I think Japanology on YouTube had a good curry documentary, they mention an old naval building is still making japanese curry from scratch in their restaurant. 12 hour process, limited stock per day, I think they start from scratch with a beef roux

Just, every so often chengguan go too far and either beat someone too important/sympathetic to the community, or actually kill / permanently cripple a victim. At which point they frequently never leave that community area, and no-one talks much about it any more. Although obviously videos circulate. Honestly, the US could learn a lot from that. If US police were aware that going too far could lead to them being beaten to death and their bodies never being found, maybe the current situation wouldn't exist.

Shame how all those BLM people killed themselves by shooting themselves in the back of the head and then setting their own cars on fire.

After reading all the no why storied in this thread I dont have much faith in the Chinese armies abilities. Combined with the fact that the military rank structure is probably built on connection rather than competence makes it a recipe for a complete poo poo show. Still hoping we don't get to find out though.

Squalid posted:so, could anyone tell this ignorant foreigner who the Chengguan are and their official purpose? Because I'm real intrigued now chengguan are weird cuz everyone fuckin hates them (even normal cops). they basically show up and make everyone's lives miserable for a while by persuing people on really stupid loving poo poo and they eventually go to far and then disappear for a while. theyre like openly antagonistic and just appear then disappear and i have no idea what their actual purpose is. I remember there was a time a couple years ago that they would put loving tape all around all the rental bikes in my neighborhood which just pissed everyone off. people would ask why and theyd say oh like 2 of the bikes were parked outside official bike parking areas so we had to block the entire sidewalk with a giant brick of taped up bicycles no one can ride. local people would complain they couldn't park their own bikes/ride the rental bikes/walk down the sidewalk and these guys just shrug their shoulders. they also get mad at anything remotely resembling a street stall, but the SH gov has come out and said theyre gonna allow street vendors again so idk what they'll do now. the normal cops in china seem p harmless for the most part since they ignore everything, so its hard for them to cause any trouble. the traffic cops are fuckin crazy these days tho with making sure people do things like "not drive super fast through red lights, almost hitting pedestrians" which wasn't the case before. idk anyone even in china who would defend the chengguan, however in most people's minds chengguan are different from normal police so i could see a "chengguan = bad, normie cops = harmless bystander" thing happening in some people's heads. actually you sometimes even get stories about the normal police getting beaten up by chengguan for not supporting them lol Ailumao fucked around with this message at 08:32 on Jun 10, 2020 |

Squalid posted:so, could anyone tell this ignorant foreigner who the Chengguan are and their official purpose? Because I'm real intrigued now Party thugs. That's not even a joke really, that's their role. They apply party violence against whoever needs it. It's like if you took the police brutality out of American police and made it its own Department of Brutality. Chinese cops do beat people up but for the most part they just nap and ignore everything. The Chengguan show up with sledgehammers. I'm not sure about the cops with the assault rifles and APCs that you see around. In Chengdu there's a Tibetan neighborhood downtown-ish that is surrounded and patrolled by those guys. I assume they're People's Armed Police but I tried to avoid them.

Chengguan is basically "street vendors patrol", that's why they are so unpopular in China. They don't really do other awful stuff such as forced illegal building demolition etc. Chengguan is type of city function that highlight the diFference between the Chinese culture and the Indian culture. stephenthinkpad fucked around with this message at 18:14 on Jun 10, 2020 |

So China has split its police into specialised branches, instead of the Western approach where there's just one organisation that'll ticket you for speeding and beat you up for being poor in public?
