I think (hope) we're going to see a bunch of these coming down in the next few weeks. The francophone bourgeoisie that ruled Belgium during the 19th century, being political masterminds, helpfully engineered conditions so that there is almost no one in the country who has any particular attachment to the monarchy. No one's going to care if they start tearing these statues down, in fact the (Flemish) nationalists will be cheering almost just as loudly.

A few goons have been compiling all the statues and monuments being pulled down and I'm compiling them and putting them in the Blessed Thread. Link here to the first post. More continuing below it and onto the next page.

The city's already removed it 'for restoration' and 'for safety reasons'. Wink wink, nudge nudge, it's never coming back. Antwerp is run by the nationalists and they're not sorry to see a statue of a 19th-century Belgian king go. They're on the right side of history here, if mostly by accident.

Zopotantor posted:Should have just sawn the hands off. They did something like that back in 2004 to the Ostend one: They cut off the hands of one of the 'adoring Congolese', which imo is even more poignant. This statue is actually significantly more hosed up than just one of the guy himself, and I hope it's the next to go.
