Honestly I quite enjoyed FC5's gameplay and design, it just had writing so bad, cowardly and intrusive it kind of ruined things.

I'm pages late but every time this comes up I remember how frustrated I was by this game. FC5 was one of the more disappointing games I've played in the last few years because it was good gameplay and Ubi's best open world yet, married to a godawful, pointlessly mean-spirited story that actively antagonizes the player. You seem to be having too much fun romping around this open world and its many diversions, so here's a game mechanic that will tear you away from that and force you to engage with our terrible, miserable story that is extremely un-fun and manages to stomp all over over whatever message the writers had in mind when coming up with the first draft.

DC Murderverse posted:

I finished Outer Wilds last week and decided to start on it's name buddy Outer Worlds tonight.

I distinctly remember when that game came out a big to-do about the first planet and what you should do for the first major decision/story mission and honestly anyone who did anything other than burn Edgewater to the ground and salt the ashes is at best a dummy and at worst evil, that poo poo is almost comically evil.

I just picked this up on Gamepass and finished that first planet last night, and there were a couple of times where I rolled my eyes at the mealymouthed dialog choices and companion dialog that attempted to humanize the tyrant running Edgewater and rationalize doing anything other than nuking the town.

The game seems... fine, I guess? It's not as bad as I expected based on its detractors in these here forums, but it's also not terribly compelling yet, either. The dialog and the setting seem mismatched, like they wanted to mimic the ambiguity and moral choice that you found in Fallout 3/New Vegas, but they failed to give the setting itself any room whatsoever for moral ambiguity. The art assets and in-world lore all unambiguously scream "terrifying corporatist dystopian hellscape economy based on de facto slavery", which is a weird setting to go with if you were trying to leave room for moral ambiguity in your player choices. Does the game/writing get worse as you go on, or do people hate it just because the writing never really grapples that much with the basic premise?

I haven't played Disco Elysium but Outer Worlds just isn't very good. It's an enormously uninspired RPG in every aspect.

Actually it's just because it's bad.

The asexual lesbian companion who needs exactly 1 instance if being told "you go girl" to get over her years of trauma is laughably tone-deaf imo

Of course, I only saw that going back on a second playthrough because the game let's you just ignore the breakwater entirely.

I really wanted to like Outer Worlds, but there just wasn't enough interesting things to like.

After Edgewater a lot of the game just sort of bleeds together into a sort of... nothing.

yeah its a game that makes a decent enough first impression that its easy enough to forgive some of the poo poo in edgewater, but everything after that is just edgewater but worse and written more stupidly, and the deeper you get into the mechanics the more it falls apart

Even discounting the political opinions outer worlds is incredibly bland. There's no real care put into the world design. It's like a beige wall; yes, it's functional as a wall and the painting was done well, but there's nothing there to make you give a poo poo.

I've not played any of the ME series after 2 and while I was kind of sort of looking forward to Outer Worlds when it was first announced, I guess I'm just not excited about it at all either. Maybe Cyberpunk 2077 in September will be good.

This puts it beautifully

Like that coat of beige paint is IMPECCABLE, all done with hand brushes and perfectly even with few visible stroke marks, but at the end of the day it's still a beige wall
