While going through some old photos, I came across one of my dog (Snowy) and cat (Spuds). Spuds loved to hang out with the Snowy all the time, at first he would move, but eventually just learned to put up with it.

I think cats love having best friends outside their species because cat politics are complex. I think domestic cats are evolutionarily selected to be relatively outgoing, since that would increase their chances of getting food from humans (either directly or indirectly). But it's not necessarily limited to humans, they can get attached to other animals in a similar way. I doubt you would see a wild cat in Egypt chumming it up with a hippo.
