This reminds me of a story. During the "Cody and Goldust get fired" storyline, there was a pitch for an angle where Dusty would be given the option to choose one of them to be rehired. The writer's encounter with Dusty went something like this: Writer: "So, Stephanie says that one of your sons will be re-hired, but you have to pick which o..." Dusty: " I pick Codeh." Writer: "Well, the idea is that you're conflicted about it and then eventually decide that you can't pick one over the oth..." Dusty: "I. PICK. CODEH." Writer: "But..." Dusty: "CODEH." (I don't think he was saying Cody was his "favorite" so much as that given their relative stations in life at the time, of course he'd pick Cody.)

I think that speaks to how like Dusty and probably Dustin would have both agreed that it was logical to see Cody as the future and the younger star with the potential to be something greater while to WWE Cody and Dustin were just cogs in the machine and thus Like its less about Cody and more just about the WWE way of seeing its talent, which is not as unique individuals.

I do wonder if Dusty had lived for a few more years would NXT be what it is today? Could've been pushed out or marginalized but all the best people to come out of NXT's prime credit him. He very well may have passed right before things got too political and WWE weird.

I can never tell what people credit Dusty for at NXT. Because like from my perspective it seemed kind of obvious that NXT under Dusty was kind of old school and different from WWE proper and after he died it shifted into a more WWE proper product. But people seem big on crediting HHH for that stuff as evidence that he'd run WWE proper better. Which is weird to me since "bad" post Dusty NXT feels way more "HHH" to me.

Yeah, no one really knows who makes what decisions so NXT gets to be a black box that you can pull assumptions out of. I do kind of agree that post-dusty nxt has had a quality problem but it's hard to really say if that's because dusty left. The decline in quality also comes with nxt becoming bigger, Vince taking more interest, more mixing of nxt and the main roster. The promos are definitely worse though. Not having dusty as a promo coach has not helped NXT.
