I'm curious how self-serious those kinds of authors are when it comes to the general public, like outside of the subject matter itself being very personal to them. If they get criticism like "Oh I thought it was good, but I wouldn't read it again because I prefer lighter fare" would they be like "That's fair, it's heavy material and not for everybody" or are they more likely to be all "Oh so your one of those plebs who only watches/reads stuff for fight scenes and jokes, huh? Moron..." (edit, specifically referring to media like Maus more than poo poo like Forrest Gump)

(I think Maus is really good. American Beauty sucks, though.) It's actually in one of the later volumes of Maus that Art Spiegelman found it hard to deal with the attention that Maus was getting. He found it to be an awful lot of pressure, and it slowed down the pace of his work. That's not exactly what you're saying, but I think he can probably relate to people finding it rather heavy.
