like, how does stux not realize it is Naughty Dog themselves cynically exploiting the “doesthedogdie.com” hand-wringers by emphasizing the dog-killing in both their pre-release marketing/interviews and in-game cutscenes according to the polygon review?

What I object to is that it's inherently bad writing and on it's face making the player feel uncomfortable is saying something. But you are right, I have no idea the context of that scene. Just saying it's bad on it's face because of technical reasons is really reductive. Like, yes they could have had you choose not to kill the dog but they didn't and they made you feel uncomfortable about being forced to do so. That's not a meaningless gesture and, as you say, it is by design.

They designed it in a way that many people feel is stupid, and those people are reacting to that by saying as much. You can make an artistic statement that falls flat on its face. The fact that it's "art" doesn't mean you can't gently caress it up. They tried something, and it didn't work. It's not hurting the Artistic Integrity Of Gaming to say that.

Neil Druckmann: anyway we make you kill dogs in this game... it’s really grisly; we watched a lot of reference videos to get the viscera gleaming just right. It’s gonna make you feel like poo poo when you do it, haha ; we put in so much effort, in this dog killing. “Do you feel like a hero yet?” Haha I just came up with that myself, anyway thanks for the interview

Neil Druckmann: "i personally went out and adopted several dogs and puppies from a kennel and than put mocap suits on them and killed them in graphic ways with guns and poo poo lying around my shed at my lake house and by god i took my time with each one so we could get every nail every hammer/brick blow and yelp/scream correctly and i was rock hard the whole time but it was because i wanted the player to EXPERIENCE it and understand why mike vick was bad man and why hurting dogs is wrong. TBH that one review where they said they didn’t care about the first game, didn’t care about the second, then came around to thinking it’s one of the best games ever made while playing it for the review does make it seem like there’s at least something to get out of it.

There absolutely will be something to get out of it. Unless I've been massively misreading this thread, nobody's been saying the entire game is Objectively Bad and has nothing to say, the discussion has been about one specific element of the game, which many people seem to feel is subjectively bad, and has nothing to say.

also the actual point is we still don't really know what the game will be, I don't think anyone who had an opinion before today actually changed it, so it's more fun to just make fun of all of it while we still have to wait and see. holding up metacritic of all things as proof that it's actually a good game is just the most lol poo poo my dude

I dunno man I canceled my pre order after the leak but restarted it today after reading the review from my trusted video gaming review website. I’ve enjoyed a lot of games in spite of the bad story, like God of War. I usually skip most cutscenes any way so it doesn’t really matter.

my guess is the dog belongs to laura baily character and you hang out with the dog at points in the game as a puppy and older and than when your ellie you bash its head in at some point. which makes laura baily go senator Armstrong on your rear end.

Wonder how much money they've given out to reviewers, considering that the only guy i can find who actually seems to criticise the story AND gameplay mentions that it basically doesn't innovate and has ridiculous plot holes. 10/10 by the way.

E: "This is a petty revenge plot full of lovely unlikable people and where most of the main characters could be swapped out for any other and it wouldn't make a difference"

Truly amazing.

We don't need to get into any "they're all paid off" conspiracies here. It's a fact that big-budget, massive-in-scope games from huge publishers regularly get high scores for being big-budget, massive-in-scope games. Many reviewers are incapable of thinking critically about the things they play. "It's big and expensive so it must be good!" is the only metric for those people.

Plus all the tiny outlets and blogs that get guaranteed review copies from all the publishers, so long as they don't rock the boat by posting a review that isn't glowing. For those places, the writer might throw in some short nitpicks about controls or length but then go "Ultimately, it's still well worth the asking price!" in the last paragraph and stamp something between 8, 9 or 10 on it.

Also, LOL at anyone who seriously thought Naughty Dog wouldn't have a mandatory dog killing sequence.
