I was living with a Tongan family and travelled to Tonga around when that show came out. The kids found it pretty funny from memory, and were initially excited to see themselves being portrayed on tv, but there were some really culturally incorrect bits (shocking I know), which applied to Pacific Islanders more generally but definitely not Tongans.

So yeah, I guess he did well as a board racist caricature but obviously didn't do much research or probably even talk to a single Tongan person.

most modern standup is pretty embarrassing and bad nowadays honestly. I find comedians to be a pretty painful bunch that think they are some kind of modern philosophers and sources of wisdom, even though most of them are just nightclub entertainers that wake up in the late afternoon

I agree, I feel like there was a time where I liked standup but I haven't liked any of the Netflix specials I've tried. Maybe it's just me or I'm looking in the wrong places.

Please bitches. If nothing else I am a gentleman
I think the increased amount of Netflix specials has kind of shown up a lot of comedians who don't really have a solid hour and wouldn't have done a special under normal, non-netflix circumstances.

I think comedy is best enjoyed live when you're out and amped up and a bit drunk. It's only really the heavyweights that are good enough to have their material land on tv specials

He was a Bush Jr supporter, basically was on the "Lock her Up" train way back when Bill was still in office, can imagine him liking Trump for comedic reasons, early on at least.

(Apparently, he doesn't like Trump being president but is basically a rusted-on conservative and refused to do anti-Trump jokes on his latest show... So yeah, bit of a bootlicker)

Mitch Hedberg will always make me sad as I wish I could hang out and smoke with him, although the being on fire part might suck.

Billy Connolly is another funny guy from back in the day. George Carlin was fairly funny during the 00s but I didn't like his 70s and 80s stuff. I didn't want to like Bill Hicks as the prick who introduced me to him was awful but Messire Hicks is really drat good. Another one of the old school guys that I always loved was Steven Wright. Saw an old comic named Emo Phillips that made me laugh for reasons I am not even sure I understand. People mock me but I still have a soft spot for Russell Brand.

I saw Nanette live with my family, it was interesting and thought provoking, can't remember laughing much but I got the feeling that wasn't the point, overall I thought it was good. I like spoken word, storytelling, lecture-y type stuff though. When I heard it was catching on in America I thought "this won't end well".

I like Bill Bailey. Some of his later dvd's kinda veer off into "weird for the sake of being weird" territory but his earlier stuff like Part Troll toes the line a lot better and is probably the funniest standup set I've seen, imo

The thing with Jonah is that every school had that kid, but not all of them were Tongan/Pac Islanders. Same with Yilmaz on friendly Jordies or any of the lilley school characters really.

I think the choice of Jonah/yilmaz specifically is because ethnic kids were always big characters. The few at my school definitely were much more animated and dynamic than the usual white-kid class clowns.

still shouldnt have done brown-face for Jonah, though.

e: Nannette was the biggest bait and switch ever. Gadsby isnt really that funny as to warrant a special and if I wanted a talk on feminism Youtube has plenty of them. if you're doing a comedy special, do comedy. I went in expecting to laugh and instead I had to think about poo poo and I didnt want to think about poo poo, I wanted to laugh for an hour.

Bill Hicks is also poo poo.

Dave Chappelle is brilliant in the way he uses racial stereotypes as a way to poke fun at people. I watched Ali Wong with the Mrs last night and it was average, got a couple laughs out of me but I wouldn't watch it again.
