It’s pretty much exactly the same. I was starting to explain why, but realized — much like that area — it wasn’t that interesting. :v:

There probably are jobs, but most likely in Spencer or Storm Lake. Many/most people in that quarter of the state have long commutes.

Good point about the colors. I've always been pretty garbage at figuring out color matching. The space is pretty dark, yeah, but on the whole the room feels more brown to me than anything because that wood paneling goes all the way up to the roof. My wife doesn't want to consider brown couches for that reason but it looks like the previous owners had both a brown couch and a beige couch and I don't hate how it looks. But, again, I suck at that and am still trying to learn

Google color theory and start picking up the basics. Some people have a natural affinity for it the same way some people have a natural affinity for doing sums in their head, but you can absolutely learn how to use color through study.

Also there's this terrible interior design show called The Apartment that I highly recommend to anyone who likes to hatewatch reality show competitions. But it does have the actual interior designer judge do little interstitials explaining some basic design principles.

I see stuff like this and wonder how much it costs to move a house? There's so many cheap houses in small towns around here, that would be fantastic if they weren't in said small town...

How Normie Minimalism and Farmhouse Chic Took Over Contemporary Design

Kate Wagner wrote a piece about the connection between the two dominant design trends of this period and how they're a commercial product refined from anti-consumerist and self-sufficient ethos. It does a good job of laying out the threads of a lot of stuff we argue over when we talk about minimalism here. Good read and quick; check it out.

How much can I ignore the room itself in selecting furniture color and how does this relate to rebuying furniture when you move? My living room has eggshell walls (looks a little less yellow irl), molding a few feet above the floor, and a horrid fireplace that I want to hide with a curtain or large piece of art. I had settled on a 5 across walnut Ikea Besta media console but Youtube videos and the Ikea catalog got me thinking: if the room were just a white box, I would lean into my Scandinavian aesthetic and get that console in white and replace my coffee table with something white/light grey to pair with this incoming sofa and a dark blue area rug. This prompts a number of questions.

Would a white console/coffee table look worse than light/medium wood in my current living room? If yes, should I ignore it and just buy the white furniture anyway knowing it'll make me happier in the long term? Or am I forecasting my tastes too far out? Should I accept the reality of rebuying some furniture when moving and just get the walnut Besta?

Yes

No

Yes

Depends, if you do, at least its IKEA and the mistake is cheap and short-lived.

Also, doing all-white is harder than people think and takes extremely focused and coherent decor

TVs don't weigh a million pounds anymore. It's fine. I have that same one but 3 wide or whatever and it's lasted 4 years and a move and there's nothing wrong with it. It has a 55" TV on it and is easily sturdy enough for a 65"+.

I also use an ikea desk for my computer and it has lasted 7 years and 3 moves and still looks new, despite being used every single day more than anything else. Seats and sofas are where you're going to wear ikea stuff out quickly.

I like the console you have so I don't know why you're replacing it. Just get some spray paint and change it to white instead of black. You know what else you should loving do? Run curtain rods around the non-couch walls of your living area, and then just cover most of the room in some soft blue-gray drapes, in particular the ugly fireplace (so glad I can say that now.) Swap your table for something in a different shade of white/gray (or again, just paint what you have if it works well with the new couch) Navy floor rug, couch, some blue+ decorative thing like a pillow or a blanket for a little pizzaz.

Behold my masterpiece.

I love it! Especially the buffet? piece. That's gorgeous.

Your flooring and fireplace are too transitional to do a white cabinet. And, even still, when a lot of folks are doing white cabinets, it's either for the kitchen, or it's a glossy laminate. Ikea would just look out of place.

Also note, Scandinavian design does indeed incorporate color carefully (usually neutral wood colors) into a house. IE, a white table or cabinet will have a tiny bit of wood either in the doors or the tops. A white table will often have a neutrally colored or even carefully tinted rug or some colored chairs.

On interior design trends, I do get the impression that European and Scandinavian influences are becoming extremely popular in the last two years. Part of it is a strong response to the use of grey from around 2015 to 2019. So we're back to careful uses of light wood neutral colors to counteract gray.

Thanks! We love antiquing, so it's a constant (but very fun) struggle to balance the look and not overpower with heavy wood pieces

Bonus points is how cheap the stuff is... that buffet was 70 euros; cost more to get it lifted in (it's ridiculously thick wood) than it did to buy it
