If anyone wants to know more about the firms of the 70s and 80s, I highly recommend Among the Thugs, by an American writer who fell in with a United firm and then a West Ham firm during the 80s; it also explores side topics in brilliant detail, things like why decent fans kept going back even through the worst dog days of the mid-80s, or the psychology and attraction of crowd dynamics and mass violence, or the social structure of the National Front (with a supporting appearance from a pre-fame Nick Griffin).
