I like the progression in Final Fantasy Faces on the ps1. FF7 were just golf balls with googly eyes plastered on them, FF8 tried to hard to add realistic detail so ended up just a mess of pixels, and FF9 finally figured out the trick was stylisation to keep the faces distinct but simple enough to avoid clutter.

Not exactly what you're asking for but most of the characters in Dragon Age: Inquisition look like they're coated in a layer of grease.

There doesn't seem to be much distinction between what's a randomly generated quest and an actual side-quest. Regardless I got burned out before that point. The structure of the game just felt random and meandering. I'm really curious to play Horizon Zero Dawn, because while it does have the standard open-world stuff it doesn't over do it or repeat itself to an inane degree like most Ubisoft games. There are 60 collectibles to find, not 600. You climb 5 unique viewpoints and not 50 identical ones. Inspector Gesicht has a new favorite as of 13:38 on Jun 15, 2020 |

yeah horizon is real good at restraining the excess that a lot of other open world games do and i'm sure a lot of people were expecting from it pre-release. the square footage of the world sometimes feels a little too small for the setting the game is going for but it ultimately leads to better gameplay pacing

Also there are areas in Horizon that have unique visuals but otherwise have literally nothing else there, no collectibles or anything. Just a tree at the start of the game that you can jump up, only to fall into one of the branches through a crack and realise half the tree is a subway train There is no reason for that to exist, but it does and it's neat.

Rockstar have for a while now perfected the art of creating little nooks in their massive gameworlds that communicate effectively even from afar that something's hidden there, and then putting the collectibles absolutely anywhere but there. It's like they're actively being spiteful about collectibles and this being Rockstar I suspect that may be the case. I wish they'd do what I thought playing RDR2 was the obvious thing: point at collectibles using treasure maps. Treasure hunting in RDR was so much fun. GTA could do in-game Instagram posts for hints or whatever.

They also got rid of radio towers entirely after the slog that was climbing the shrine towers in 4.

It returned in a small way in New Dawn, where a few of the elite weapons need a mutant animal hide to craft. Endgame stuff you can easily avoid if you're not a hunting fan, though. The first time you have to climb anywhere in 5 the Sheriff assures you he's not going to have to clambering up towers all the time:)

Far Cry 5 Good idea: Tying overworld completion to story-beats. Bad idea: Kidnapping you on nine separate occasions whenever you progressed too far. I feel there would be a lot of potential if the series tried more of a role-playing bent. More distinct locations, fewer icons on the map, a wider variety of missions that aren't samey slugfests. Never tries to be longer than 20 hours I liked that Dying Light had quests where you picked up a kids toys in a room, or one you explored an office holding a serial killer. Neither of these tasks involved zombies or much gunplay. A good compromise for hunting would be a system where you hunt animals for skins used in upgrades, but if you don't give a poo poo then you just buy them from a trapper. Really Far Cry would be fresher if it didn't parcel all it's content like a shopping list and had a less-intrusive interface. Instead of having 10 identical caverns that all hold the same reward, why not have one cave that holds cool poo poo that isn't hinted at? Why not have side-quests that tie together in unexpected ways? Why not give me option to murder Hurk at the first opportunity?

By far the thing that bugs me most about collectibles is when the game doesn't track them for you, sometimes not even with a drat number. I'm far more likely to collect 100 widgets if I know at the 99th widget I'm not going to be using some dude's GameFAQs list and wondering how many places I'll have to retread because I can't recall which ones I already have. Spider-Man was good about showing which Backpacks you still had to get but it was bad for Secret Photo Ops in not letting you know which ones you already did. God of War was pretty good about breaking up the collectible counts by locations in the game.

I put a bunch of games on my Retropie that I had only ever played on OPM Demo discs but never got to play the full game for and man did PSX games age weirdly. I appreciate that on most of them I'm in game inside like 4 button presses. But there's no in game controller options, the tutorials are non-existent, and there are no subtitles.

Nier Automata: Weird alt tab behavior where the screen goes to windowed mode, which it also does any time game loses focus so I have to set it back to fullscreen. Cutscenes rendered 30 fps at 1600x900. For some reason the brightness keeps resetting? I don't remember these being an issue last time I played, but those cutscenes are so jarring. Might have played it on my old monitor before I got this 2k one which is why I'm noticing it so much harder. Definitely the same gpu though.

My Death Stranding server appears to be populated by idiots who love to build random structures all over the place that serve no point. Ooh, a new Zipline at the bottom of a mountain, great! I'll just jump on it a zip up the mountain... oops, no, I mean out into the middle of nowhere. Oh hey, a bridge, there must be a ravine or someth... oops no, just some flat gravel. Oh hey, a new Watchtower, there must be some MULEs about and... oops no it's just blocking a mountain pass and there's nothing nearby to look at. Stop wasting resources on pointless structures and fix the roads, dammit!
