Has anybody coined “The Disinformation Age” yet?

I suspect it’s a way bigger problem than what we’re just now realising. Most people I know are repeating bad information and insane conspiracies, even people I previously thought had reasonable critical thinking abilities are talking about dumb conspiracy theories.

Nobody seems to care about the motive of the message, just the punchline of the message. I thought the concept of doublethink was neat but implausible, but it’s everywhere now and it looks like it’s becoming the norm for popular thinking.

it's a pretty terrible time all around for people who dont know how to do their own independent reading / research. im not trying to say that even doing that is somehow easy. i dont know what the answer is here. if only there were some sort of authority, some sort of institution in place to protect people from dangerous misinformation.

You'd have thought conspiracy theorists would be happy with the actual conspiracy to pretend covid is over.

Maybe we should try and convince them the covid virus isn't real and it's actually a cover up for antibiotic-resistant pneumococcus bacteria? They're can't stop it so they're hiding it so as not to scare the public; the only way to protect yourself is hand washing, masks, and avoiding other people.

"Post-truth era" is the term I've heard thrown around a lot the last few years. Here's a decent Forbes article about it, but if you search for "post-truth" you'll find a lot more.

I think some people believe they are conducting "research" while watching YouTube videos of dudes sitting in their truck. There is a lot of easily accessible false narrative approving videos and some people feel that the simple act of searching is analogous to research.

What's insane is that conspiracy theorists have always been opposed to all governments, no matter the party, and since Trump they are all basically saying Trump is the greatest.

I don't think there has been any logic besides "I'm going to believe in the exact opposite of what is commonly accepted by mainstream medias.

This. It's fun to be a 14 year old edgelord and believe in the opposite of literally everything that is accepted truth. But most people grow out of it. Hardcore conspiracy theorists however, never grew out of it. Now we have the equivalent of a 14 year edgelord in the white house so naturally all the conspiracy theorists have latched onto him.

Yeah sadly the contrarians won't believe anything unless they personally see it, and maybe not even then (there are people who think the 9/11 planes were holograms), so news from islands like New Zealand/Taiwan isn't going to budge them a bit. Have you ever been to New Zealand/Taiwan? I haven't. How do you know they are even real, man?
