How reliable is this source? Also baseball styled brawl getting 20+ people died seem to be crazy high.

If its really 20+ people dead, PLZ better start shipping those light tanks to the plateau

India’s government seems really lovely but I’m not about to cheer on a war because in the end it’s the poor who will die, and there’s a lot of poor people in that part of the world who can’t defend themselves. I hope China is able to deescalate for the sake of that if nothing else.

The skirmish between China and India was apparently a massive fistfight in a remote cliff passage, most of the deaths were guys falling off a really crowded cliff. Also, they're not reporting it but a bunch of Chinese soldiers died too.

I don't think leadership in either country particularly want's a war, but these two approaches to deescalation, if accurate, are going to be difficult to reconcile.

If this is like the recent Indo-Pakistan dog fight both sides will claim downing more enemies and therefore the victors of the skirmish.

Also, 2020 does not gently caress around, we are still in first half.

I'm trying to imagine how China-India war would even play out. I'm guessing it'd be a horrific alpine meatgrinder that would last a few weeks before the jingoists realize that there's not going to be a quick victory and they come to an unsatisfying status quo agreement.

The thing about the Hindutva crowd is that China is a distant second or third on their list of enemies. Number one is Muslims, and half of their rage directed at China just comes from the Chinese-Pakistan relationship. If Pakistan jumps into a war they'll be happier than ever.

Anyways I doubt there will be a war. You can't imagine what a China-India war looks like because it's a stupid proposition that isn't worth fighting.

Just because it's really loving stupid doesn't mean it won't happen. I doubt there will be a war in the near-term but 20 dead soldiers has a way of causing people to re-align who they think their foreign enemies are.

I think the 20 to 43 casualty figure also disincentives escalation. After years of wolf warrior expectations, this doesn't fit the narrative, and the leaders in Beijing must (?) be realistic enough to know that further antagonism doesn't guarantee better results.

Not sure how reliable ThePrint is but they're reporting that both sides are accusing each other of violating the de-escalation agreement and that the Chinese may be demanding more than just a status quo agreement. If that's true I have no idea what the gently caress the logic is behind it. Maybe Xi Jinping really likes desolate strategically useless mountain passes?

In a head to head nuclear power war that would become increasingly lopsided as China's industrial dominance came into play over a long term bloody meatgrinding scenario wouldn't it go nuclear the second the Chinese broke out of the mountains into India proper?

I strongly doubt China could ever break through the mountains without World War levels of political willpower and domestic buy-in. The infrastructure and logistical advantage in the region is heavily on the Indian side and China would likely need to endure hundreds of thousands if not millions of casualties to secure a foothold across the Himalayas.

It went pretty badly for the Indians. They lost one aircraft shot down in air to air combat (almost certainly by a Chinese made fighter/missile), bombed a patch of empty forest, and then their AAA shot down their own SAR chopper out searching for the first downed pilot.

Most of the deaths were accidents. A few hundred guys packed onto a narrow cliff, afaik most of the Chinese deaths were from the cliff physically falling apart from the weight.

Does it matter though? That on/off behavior has been going on for decades. It is actually how N.Korea really works. If I could wager a guess, this time they are trying to boost morale inwards since the economy went to poo poo with China closing the border, virus and all.
