My question about synchronized swimming is why are they all wearing nose plugs? I swam competitively for six years and almost no one wore one because, y'know, you can just blow out your nose if you're going nostrils-first.

Because they gotta concentrate on keeping in sync during complex water dancing often times underwater and moving in short jerks for a fair bit of time. It's probably a lot, lot, LOT harder to keep the air bubble in the nose than just getting a nose plug and not have to worry about it and can just concentrate on the athletics.

I'll assume they are often in very awkward positions for long time, also underwater, so the feeling of a nose full of water must be more annoying than a clip. And it would also ruin the choreo if you would signal your whereabouts to captain Ahab every few seconds once you come up for air.
