Me and me best friend from middle school were wrapping up a multiplayer thing when he got wrecked but escaped an MCV. I picked it up with a carry-all and spent what felt like easily five minutes running away from a loving hunter-killer that was chasing it, until I misclicked and started to land and it caught up and blew up his MCV.

So in conclusion who is to say if they are good or bad,

funcom has been given the rights for six years to make games based on the upcoming dune film. but no, that wouldn't help EA with a re-master unfortunately.

One thing that sticks out to me about media in the 90s is that nobody seems to have a clue how nuclear reactors actually work. I think the events of Chernobyl made people see nuclear power stations as this ticking time bomb waiting to go off that does all sorts of weird stuff instead of realizing that the Soviets cheaped out and used faulty control rods and a positive void coefficient reactor design.

I've seen some behind the scenes stuff for it over the last two years or so, looks neat, very cool unit designs updating the TS units like the Banshee and Wolverine.

Sadly though the gameplay will be Renegade like, not really updated to the modern era, although a little different from the existing RenX gameplay.

The art is fantastic though, so I'll look forward to playing it a bit. A real shame they didn't swap to UE4 though, it is all built on UE3 like RenX so it lacks a lot of graphical fidelity.

I kinda get where you're coming from. When RenX was first announced I'd hoped it would be Renegade stylings with gameplay closer to Battlefield/Planetside 2, but that's just not their aim. Will def check it out tho.

Excellent. Looking forward to seeing what they produce. Renegade X is quite under-appreciated, including the work that continues to go into it since its first public release several years back.

I still play it from time to time and its biggest problem is the balance of units and how they work in some of the maps. Most of that is not helped because at its core Tiberian Dawn was never exactly balanced and its hard to recreate a faithful TD and Renegade experience with how the units worked in both original games.

Moving more firmly into the Tiberian Sun world will help with that.

Actually, I never played the Tiberian Sun Reborn mod for the original Renegade. Did moving into TS help with Renegade's balance?

I loved that Renegade felt just like running around in first person C&C, too fancy graphics might ruin that feeling for me. But whatever. What I would like is the same but for Red Alert. Imagine shaking soviet bases apart with Tanya. Second game might be cool too. Maybe a serious and sophisticated mission where you ride around on a dolphin fighting a giant squid boss dodging the occasional dreadnought rocket.

Reborn never really came out, there was the initial release which could wipe your hard drive when uninstalling. It was basic, infantry only plus a wolverine and a nod buggy iirc.

RenAlert (later Red Alert: A Path Beyond) was its rival and more successful mod which had multiple releases over the years while reborn struggled for various reasons to put anything out.

Then after internet flamewars, both mods became freidnly and reborn joined the APB forums and there was a push to get a stable build out in 2006. Infact, EA secured a few PCs and demospace at Gamescom to show off reborn and APB. I was involved at that time and helped make some posters and trailers for both projects.

Then once again, forum wars and drama meant reborn just sat around without much development going on while APB churned out content release after content release for a few years and then the projects finished up. A couple of years later APB 'rebooted' with essentially a new devteam and had a few more minor releases over the years, still going today after yet another forumwar where the current devteam stole the forum database overnight while the admin was asleep and split the community up! And only just last month reborn had one of the 'creators' of the project threaten to sue the other people claiming he owned assets involved and wants control of the project again.

Reborn continues to forever just be 6 months away from a release. The balance didn't really change form Renegade too much, mainly map design helped to differentiate it with larger maps and less choke points. APB had much larger maps and new mechanics and aircraft and naval units which really changed gameplay from Renegade.

While Renegade X copied Renegade gameplay by about 90% so while it was cool, got a bit stale playing it 5 years ago with 2003 gameplay. Which is a pity this new release won't change things up again too much, a few of us wanted a TS project with a more battlefield feel of gameplay after working on APB for years and considering it finished, but life got in the way.

Quite a few goons posting in this very thread worked on APB over they years, Chronojam being the leader of the project during its most successful years.

Wow Drunkill, I never knew there was such drama going on behind the scenes or that uninstall issue wiping your hard drive. I remember some of the bits like merging with APB and just always assumed it got a good release or two. What a crazy history.

As there are a few posters with community links going back 20+ years has there been much heard of Lion who used to run the fan site CNCDen? Is he well? I used to help post news for a short while back on his site and never heard anything again after he decided to retire himself and the site.

Played some Tiberian Sun today. Just as I recall the atmosphere is great but the gameplay is just not there. The lighting is really cool though.

I'm trying to think of other similar lighting effects in 2D or pseudo-3D games. The ones I can think of are Doom and Diablo I & II. It's this unique look where you have only a dozen or so "light levels" and the resulting "banding" or otherwise lack of smooth transitions of the light levels looks unique to that mid-90s era.

Anyone recall other games with similar dynamic lights?

It's pretty janky and simplistic I'm afraid. I gave it a try through Steam family sharing and one skirmish was enough, don't think there's a campaign or anything. The guy's working on a space-based sequel that actually looks to have some meat on it but we'll see.

Sometimes, in a city this dirty, you need a real hero.
I think my issues with TS were that it leaned too heavily into the future tech aspect of things (IIRC).

The first game (and the 3rd) had this "what if current tech but with a bit of a twist" so you had things like GDI having an Ion Cannon, NOD having a flame throwing tank and a motor bike that fired rockets.

But Sun has bipedal robots, cyborgs, hovertanks, Mortal Kombat Kano styled healing face masks, etc. It's like an extreme fanfic of the C&C series.

Hell, i could even swear it feels like C&C3 retcons it out of existence.

I don't think C&C 3 retcons it as much as it was perceived to when it was released. This is especially true with Kane's Wrath, but even the base game isn't that bad with ignoring TS.

So far the best guess is the HD graphics are using some kinda fancy load-on-demand texturing scheme instead of just having everything precached, so it loads tons of stuff in the early game. There also seems to be some vsync problem.

TS never grabbed me the way TD/3 did so I did not mind the lack of walkers with their giant shoot-me knee joint weakspots because I hate fun and think walkers are absurd. But, fair's fair - they certainly were different. Gimme that hover MLRS, though.

KOGAHAZAN!! posted:

Didn't they add a faction in the expansion which had walkers again? KW did a huge amount of bridging the gap between TS/3. Which made sense really: 3 was a specific slice of time and a specific vibe ("we love TD, a lot") and KW jumping around made a really natural reason to jump around with unit selection, too.

also firehawks were fun to micro, especially with the stratobooster upgrade. I liked those a lot.
