If I remember correctly, that was a gag that Groening wanted in the show as a crossover to his Life in Hell comic. Maybe not something that would explicitly be on-screen, but as a sort of inside joke among the writers and animators. Kind of like how "Krusty the clown" was originally going to be Homer's secret side-job rather than a separate character.
