i didn't "just" figure this out but it was something i believed for a long time as a kid: i thought the wu tang clan was a serious martial arts group from china if this seems dumb you have to know that im from a very rural area in the netherlands with no cable, no record store and basically no source of pop culture other than what you heard from friends or maybe on the radio. i loved rap but the only way i could get rap was by copying a friend's cd's onto cassette tape. i didn't have the original cd case or sleeve, i'd never seen any of the video clips, i only had the music itself. i did speak english but not to the point where i could understand every word in the lyrics either. i guess i also just didn't give it that much thought. i didn't have internet access until 2002 or so, by that point i began to figure out that at least the china part was wrong but i still somehow thought they were martial artists. i knew that the members of wu tang clan were black and that they were american, but they kept mentioning "shaolin" and chinese stuff and a temple and i didn't see why this group of fellows from the united states couldn't travel to china in order to focus on martial arts and music, i thought this concept was cool and it was part of why i liked the group so much. i didn't get any of the stuff referring to being arrested or taken to riker's island or whatever, i took all of the metaphors at face value. other than their ethnicity i didn't know what the individual members really looked like either. i pictured ghostface killa as a guy in a kung fu suit with scary ghost makeup. i thought old dirty bastard was like a sort of sexually perverted pensioner who hung out with them for comic relief. back then i would also walk around wearing a wu tang clan shirt that i somehow found in a store at some point and was very proud of, i'm glad nobody who actually knew anything at all about the group questioned me about that. i'm glad i never went to any of their concerts back then either because who knows how that wouldve gone over

what makes it even dumber was that i actually visited new york around the same time (i was 14), i went with my parents and took the ferry to staten island and back, i never realized that this was in fact "shaolin" and never made the connection with the group whose shirt i was wearing. i knew that new york had a lot of rap and i did know or suspect that wu tang clan was from new york (before they immigrated to china to focus on martial arts, of course), but i never quite put 2 and 2 together thanks for reading e: i forgot to mention that my wife thought wu tang clan was just a single person. we're a match made in heaven Shibawanko has a new favorite as of 12:54 on Jun 21, 2020 |

another thing that i based this belief on was that there was a playstation game about the clan (with a famously bad controller in the shape of the logo), which was a beat em up. i never got a chance to play it and didnt have a PS1 but i just assumed that it must be based on their daily life and training

Henchman of Santa posted:Wu-Tang Clan always refers to it as Shaolin as part of their mythology. Always love a band with lore. i think im probably not the only one who misunderstood that bit but i held on to the idea of "china" for a long time. even after i realized that they were in fact operating from new york, i first thought like "well they must still travel to china a lot right? they have a temple there after all" and from there to "oh i guess they don't, well then they must still be from chinatown in new york" (i pictured a compound like tracer tong's in deus ex), the thought that they had nothing to do with china was just somehow unacceptable and i held on to that notion like a flat earther part of it was also that i had a severely distorted image of what the US was like, completely based off of miami vice and side scrolling beat em ups like final fight and stuff, i thought it was a ridiculously dangerous place where you'd either get murdered or get the electric chair for a minor offense. so i thought that the wu tang clan had escaped that situation by moving to china, which seemed sensible enough Shibawanko has a new favorite as of 15:29 on Jun 21, 2020 |

To be fair, that's actually not that far off from reality. Funnily enough, even though I'm probably a bit younger than you (I had the internet when I was 14) and from a small city in the Netherlands (Almere), I had the same idea. It wasn't that elaborate because I wasn't a fan of rap music (or any really, music never really clicked with me until I was 16ish) but I thought pretty much the same.

If you walk it back a couple steps what you describe isn't entirely unlike RZA's Asian philosophy obsession and the image he wanted Wu Tang to reflect so I wouldn't feel too bad.

You should absolutely write to them. My comparatively lame discovery is that in the chorus of "Psycho Killer", it's not "fi-fi-fi-fire, fi-fi-fi-fi-fire fire". It's "far", and never caught the word "better" at the end of that line. I was watching something yesterday on TV with closed captioning that used that song and had to pause it to make a look. I've had that wrong for over 30 years.
