Yes we managed to almost stomp out the pandemic and yet as seen in the video kids are now gathering by groups of thousands to party despite otherwise people being quite cooperative.

What's the current take on the next few months from epidemiological professionals? Just from a layperson/news junky perspective, it's hard not to be deeply concerned that the apparent spikes across the country and re-opening in places where infection rate never stopped accelerating will lead to a bad loving And then everyone will panic and be all "how could we have ever predicted this? why didn't anyone warn us?" for a few minutes before going back to flaunting basic preventative practices.

It's like 4k/day in Florida alone right now, and that's just the cases they know about/report. But hey if we just stop testing, we can get those cases down to zero, baby!

Maskchat? No, faceshield chat! https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2765525 quote:The supply chain for medical masks is concentrated in China and the origin of the outbreak there resulted in factory closures and critical shortages. To preserve medical masks for health care facilities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that all persons wear a cloth mask in public for source control. Cloth masks have been shown to be less effective than medical masks for prevention of communicable respiratory illnesses,8 although in vitro testing suggests that cloth masks provide some filtration of virus-sized aerosol particles.9 Face shields may provide a better option. Hmm, interesting. https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/buckner-face-shields-demand-1.5613976 quote:Already in regular use by medical staff and some members of the public, face shields appear to be gaining appeal, boosting sales for manufacturers. And you can wear them while eating if you are forced to eat in public. Try doing that with a mask. quote:But what about the vanity factor? Unlike masks, which are available in colourful, playful and even dressy styles, most face shields on the market look more like what riot police wear — an image seen in many disturbing news reports lately. Stylish and cool.

Or until the proportion of already infected/immune people grows to high enough to slow it down. I know you're thinking testing won't keep up with that until the end anyway, but I don't think that matters. It's perfectly possible to keep the estimated number close to the truth by just testing a random sample of 1 in X people and then multiplying cases by X, countries just won't be inclined to do that. And it's also perfectly possible to gently caress with the numbers if you do have enough capacity to test everyone, as shown around the globe right now. Either way testing capacity isn't the reason the numbers are fucky.

The situation in my hometown is interesting. We haven’t had any new cases in over two weeks, and generally there are very few active known cases in Finland at the moment. People have completely given up on aaaaaany precautions. The beer terraces are at capacity, nobody is wearing masks, the stores have taken away the hand sanitation stations, at the gym nobody but me was wiping down machines after use (which is disgusting even in normal times) and a middle eastern dude told me I was a racist for wiping down the bench after him, before getting on it myself. Apparently ”we’re in the middle of the biggest worldwide pandemic in a century” hasn’t registered with a lot of people. When the second wave hits, it’s going to be loving bruuuuuuutal.

My colleague just send an email to everybody from our studio (where I haven’t been in 3 months ) that he knew some people from the studio who do work there had gone to a massive rave in Brussels and that it was unacceptable. Here in Ohio all the hiking trails are swamped with people, and have been since mid-March. Places where I used to be able to hike without seeing another person are now too crowded for me to risk it. On top of everything else, all these new hikers don’t know how to treat resources with care and respect, so the trails and parks have deteriorated quite a bit. I’d been hoping that these people would start going back to the malls and Home Depots once those opened, but it’s been a month and trail use doesn’t seem to have gone down much.
