That would be more encouraging to our situation, if not for the reality that it's not just our young people who are spreading the disease; boomers have been out in force making it clear that they don't want to wear masks and need to have different friends over for dinner every loving day.

Also the whole thing where numerous other countries have nearly stomped out the pandemic despite having tons of young people. Not saying that they have universal compliance, but obviously enough compliance to keep their numbers from growing exponentially

The post I was responding to was about Belgium, where we don't have the same problem with boomers as in the US and which is mainly cultural and political.

What's the current take on the next few months from epidemiological professionals? Just from a layperson/news junky perspective, it's hard not to be deeply concerned that the apparent spikes across the country and re-opening in places where infection rate never stopped accelerating will lead to a bad loving summer year.

And then everyone will panic and be all "how could we have ever predicted this? why didn't anyone warn us?" for a few minutes before going back to flaunting basic preventative practices.

In the beginning of May I recall some medical professionals saying that a sudden reopening could trigger a scenario where the first wave never dies out and we just sit at like 20-30K cases a day nationally through the end of the year

We’re almost certainly heading that way

Maskchat? No, faceshield chat!

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2765525

quote:

The supply chain for medical masks is concentrated in China and the origin of the outbreak there resulted in factory closures and critical shortages. To preserve medical masks for health care facilities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that all persons wear a cloth mask in public for source control. Cloth masks have been shown to be less effective than medical masks for prevention of communicable respiratory illnesses,8 although in vitro testing suggests that cloth masks provide some filtration of virus-sized aerosol particles.9 Face shields may provide a better option.

Face shields come in various forms, but all provide a clear plastic barrier that covers the face. For optimal protection, the shield should extend below the chin anteriorly, to the ears laterally, and there should be no exposed gap between the forehead and the shield’s headpiece. Face shields require no special materials for fabrication and production lines can be repurposed fairly rapidly. Numerous companies, including Apple, Nike, GM, and John Deere, have all started producing face shields. These shields can be made from materials found in craft or office supply stores. Thus, availability of face shields is currently greater than that of medical masks.

Face shields offer a number of advantages. While medical masks have limited durability and little potential for reprocessing, face shields can be reused indefinitely and are easily cleaned with soap and water, or common household disinfectants. They are comfortable to wear, protect the portals of viral entry, and reduce the potential for autoinoculation by preventing the wearer from touching their face. People wearing medical masks often have to remove them to communicate with others around them; this is not necessary with face shields. The use of a face shield is also a reminder to maintain social distancing, but allows visibility of facial expressions and lip movements for speech perception.

Most important, face shields appear to significantly reduce the amount of inhalation exposure to influenza virus, another droplet-spread respiratory virus. In a simulation study, face shields were shown to reduce immediate viral exposure by 96% when worn by a simulated health care worker within 18 inches of a cough.10 Even after 30 minutes, the protective effect exceeded 80% and face shields blocked 68% of small particle aerosols,10 which are not thought to be a dominant mode of transmission of SARS-CoV-2. When the study was repeated at the currently recommended physical distancing distance of 6 feet, face shields reduced inhaled virus by 92%,10 similar to distancing alone, which reinforces the importance of physical distancing in preventing viral respiratory infections. Of note, no studies have evaluated the effects or potential benefits of face shields on source control, ie, containing a sneeze or cough, when worn by asymptomatic or symptomatic infected persons. However, with efficacy ranges of 68% to 96% for a single face shield, it is likely that adding source control would only improve efficacy, and studies should be completed quickly to evaluate this.

Hmm, interesting.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/buckner-face-shields-demand-1.5613976

quote:

Already in regular use by medical staff and some members of the public, face shields appear to be gaining appeal, boosting sales for manufacturers.

Fans say the devices are not only cooler to wear than cloth masks, but they allow for better breathing, make it easier to be understood when speaking. And most importantly, they offer better protection from the virus.

"Face shields protect your eyes, your nose and your mouth," said Dr. Michael Edmond, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Iowa, who recently published an article promoting shields in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

"Those are the three areas where the virus can enter the body."

Edmond said while face masks are intended to protect others, a face shield protects the wearer.

"Masks are really being recommended to control the virus at source, not to protect you," he said.

And you can wear them while eating if you are forced to eat in public. Try doing that with a mask.

quote:

But what about the vanity factor? Unlike masks, which are available in colourful, playful and even dressy styles, most face shields on the market look more like what riot police wear — an image seen in many disturbing news reports lately.

"They're bulky, they're uncomfortable, they're awkward," said Joe Doucet, a New York City-based multidisciplinary designer who works in consumer electronics, graphic design, architecture and fashion.

"It's completely alien to put one on. You feel like you're living in a bad dystopian future."

But after Doucet read several articles about how effective the devices are in preventing COVID-19 contagion, he concluded people should be encouraged to wear face shields.

"I thought that if I can make them stylish and cool, people would want to wear them," he said.

I know you're thinking testing won't keep up with that until the end anyway, but I don't think that matters. It's perfectly possible to keep the estimated number close to the truth by just testing a random sample of 1 in X people and then multiplying cases by X, countries just won't be inclined to do that. And it's also perfectly possible to gently caress with the numbers if you do have enough capacity to test everyone, as shown around the globe right now. Either way testing capacity isn't the reason the numbers are fucky.

The situation in my hometown is interesting. We haven’t had any new cases in over two weeks, and generally there are very few active known cases in Finland at the moment. People have completely given up on aaaaaany precautions. The beer terraces are at capacity, nobody is wearing masks, the stores have taken away the hand sanitation stations, at the gym nobody but me was wiping down machines after use (which is disgusting even in normal times) and a middle eastern dude told me I was a racist for wiping down the bench after him, before getting on it myself.
