Played a few rounds in the last few days. The bots are an annoyance, but it seems like people are pretty on it about kicking them almost before they're out the spawn doors. It's an embarrassment to the game for sure, but it's still more or less playable. Wish I had something better to say though.

Maybe it's wishful thinking but I do feel like there's at least slightly fewer conventional aimbotters playing now that the spam bots are flooding the servers. Having the cheaters announce themselves for a quick kicking is a step up, sort of?

They should use the SA model and make the game free to play but if you ever eat a ban you need to pay :10bux: to start a new account

Just permanently ban anyone that posts a racist screed in text chat

From life in general ideally, but also you just know if they were hardware-banned from dota they'd care about it a lot more than just getting that one account banned from tf2.

Here's something that I've run into: I'll join a game, and after a bit, I'll start hearing some offensive mic spam. However, looking in the corner to see who's name it is, I see that my username and avatar is showing up as the person speaking, even though I don't have a microphone set up currently.

I thought maybe it had to do with Windows 10 automatically hooking into application that have mic support, but even after toggling it off, it kept happening. I asked in text chat in one game, and apparently, there are 'mimics' that will copy your name and spam the mic. It was suggested that changing classes would help, but I'm worried someone's going to copy my name and start spamming something offensive, and I'll get banned as a result. For the time being, I've turned off voice chat in-game, so I don't hear anything, but for all I know, your name will still get picked, and you just won't be able to see it.

If you see a bot spoofing your name, immediately go to the menu and call a vote to kick them. You cannot select yourself on the game's vote kick interface, so there is no risk of calling a vote on yourself this way, but if a teammate tries to call a vote on them they have a 50/50 chance to pick you instead. So you really want to try to beat them to the punch (in addition to generally wanting the rear end in a top hat gone ASAP.)

I was complaining about all this bot account hacker nonsense in my last post over 2 months ago. Sorry to repeat everyone else but yeah it's still unplayable right now. I tried to play a week ago and I sent an actual email to gaben who I'm sure no longer reads that e-mail like he did back in the days. No response from gaben@valvesoftware.com.

Tried to play again for about 10 minutes, 3 servers tonight. Still unplayable. When Valve made TF2 officially F2P they also made a promise to be vigilant about this poo poo. Well over a month of unplayable TF2 has happened... over a month ago. So what? Just competitive? How do you think an ongoing competitive scene can exist in a game that is also absolutely UNPLAYABLE TO ALL CASUAL USERS.

Have you tried creators.tf or other similar servers?

I also pretty much only play on Creators or other community servers now. I’ve been on them since November and have only ran into two cases of cheaters/greifers. A simple “/call” in chat had them kicked in under a few minutes and permanently banned.

That said valve has released two updates targeting the cheaters. I think it’s the VAC team that’s slacking (they are having similar problems in CSGO with aimbots as well)

I've run into a new issue this morning where I seem to get lag no matter what server I join. I'll be trying to move somewhere, only for the game to hang, and then I jump to a new point. It seems like it's something on my end, but I don't know what it could be. I tried playing a game in training mode, and ran into no problems.

Could it be related to the bot issue?

If you open the console with ` (the button below escape) you can type "net_graph 1" to show basic networking stuff. Put "net_graph 0" to turn it back off.

Doing that right now, and it looks like the 'in' variable is where it's hanging, because the number will freeze.

I honestly don't know what I should be looking for, or what I should do to fix it.

You can try changing the number to 2/3/4 as well for more detail. Try it on a server you think you should have quite low ping.

I tried 'net_graph 2' and captured some screenshots:

The area highlighted by the arrows is what would come up when I got the lag hits. I dunno what it represents, though.

The good news is that I was able to fix the problem by rebooting my computer. Dunno why that fixed it, though. I'm guessing either something was running in the background that was interfering, or I just needed to restart it (I left it on sleep mode last night, so I'm thinking maybe it was a memory thing.)

On a laptop, closing the lid puts it in sleep mode. That's not the same as shutting down, so across a month until next reboot for updates you'll easily accumulate many days of uptime. Similar, I also put my desktop PC in hibernation at night instead of shutting it down.

The number of times I've cold-booted my computer in the last year I could probably count on one hand

I have more than one laptop so if I know it's gonna be in sleep mode for more than 3-5 days off of the charger, I'll actually shut it down, but it's exceedingly rare

Windows 10 recently introduced a weird feature that nukes sleep time to ~22 hours on most laptops unless you modify some very specific settings

Usually, I'll turn it off before going to bed, but some times I'll just put it on sleep mode, even though the boot time isn't that long. I think there have been times where I've done it two or three days in a row, and I think that might have been the case when I started having issues with TF2.

I've heard that it's more power-efficient or something to just leave it on sleep mode, but I think the way it works is that if you don't do a shutdown or reboot every so often, it doesn't clear memory properly, or applications never stop writing to the disc. It also might not pick up new changes until it does a check or proper refresh.

I feel like it's healthier for the overall life of the computer if shut everything down, because it effectively 'flushes' all the background processes down. Otherwise, everything is just sort of suspended.

actually nowadays when you tell the PC to "shut down", windows is actually doing what's called a "hybrid shutdown". All applications are killed but the kernel itself hibernates to shorten startup time the next time.

functionally it is not really any different than logging out the machine but leaving it running. User stuff is killed, kernel stays up.

You are only truly shutting down the kernel if you (a) do a restart, (b) the system hard-crashes or powers off abruptly for some reason, (c) you command an advanced shutdown through recovery, or (d) you explicitly go out of your way to turn hybrid shutdown off.

Earlier today I played a game, and while it had a few bots in it, it also had an "Anti-Bot Bot." It was an aimbot, but it only ever fired at people on its bot whitelist. It repeatedly spoke in chat telling who the bots were, and once the bots had been kicked it quit the server. It was amazing.
