I think it's mostly apocryphal, but there's some history of the Swedes having a somewhat unusual relationship with death. For example they have several suicide cliffs where, as the story goes, they used to throw the old and infirm off of. Even if those stories aren't literally true, things like that certainly influence their culture.

sucks to be right
The US had 31,496 reported infections yesterday which is a shockingly high number for a Monday. It's been around 20k to 25k for the last two months, the last time there was a count this high on a Monday was way back on April 6 which was when NYC was passing their peak and starting to get their infection numbers under control.

My in-laws said they were "done with masks" this past weekend, since they're tired of having to remember to wear them.

Accordingly, my wife and I will not be seeing them any time soon. Tough conversation but this poo poo is far from over, it's insanely irritating for people to say they're tired of wearing masks when my wife and I wear them all day at work and have no problems wearing them anywhere we might encounter other people.

But it's apparently soooo hard to wear a mask for a few hours a week to get groceries or whatever.

Turns out the cure is much, much worse than the virus, RIP America.

Time to start stocking up again on vitamins, minerals, TP, etc. I should've bought N95's at maybe a 5% markup in January when I heard about this but missed the boat. I have all kinds of masks to wear depending on contact level of the place I am going to go. My favorite gas station is awesome because the guy always wears a mask and gloves and is never that busy. If I see people in their without a mask I wait in my car until they leave. Grocery stores, Walmart, Marcs, etc need at least 2 masks. At least hand santitizer is pretty easy to get now.

there will be shortages once the covid cases pick up and hospitals are overwhelmed beyond capacity. seeing footage of old people dying in the hallways from covid will make people panic buy again. give it 3-4 weeks

Sent an email to my boss asking if we were going to wait for someone to get sick or die before acknowledging that the coronavirus situation is not getting better, and even then if the company would acknowledge it at all. I told him the proper company man line would be to tell me to quit if I felt unsafe at work. The casinos around us are closing again. The cleaning person they have on overnight believes that coronavirus is a hoax by liberals to ruin Trump's campaign so they are half-assing nightly sanitation. I hate that every time I post in this thread it's because poo poo is just getting worse. On the upside my computer's motherboard killed itself so there will be less updates. Keep safe. Here in Florida, we opened our casino at 50% capacity and masks are required but the security staff was gutted coming back and we're just as packed as we ever were pre-pandemic.
There's not enough manpower to walk around and enforce the masks so everyone just walks around with their mask under their chin smoking or not wearing one at all.
There's rumors of at least 10 or so dealers and a few servers testing positive already but no official word

He seems to just fundamentally not understand what the purpose of testing is and how catching a cold or virus actually works. There were the comments weeks back when one of his aides got the virus and he said:

"She tested very good for a long period of time and then all of a sudden today she tested positive. ... So she tested positive out of the blue. This is why the whole concept of tests aren't necessarily great. The tests are perfect but something can happen between a test where it's good and then something happens and all of a sudden, she was tested very recently and tested negative and then today, I guess, for some reason, she tested positive."

Trump believes the human body has a finite amount of energy and that exercising uses up that energy. This is completely true, you can find him talking about it multiple times.

"Everything we did in the past month, we did with a pure heart and sincere intentions. Our tournament was meant to unite and share a message of solidarity and compassion throughout the region.

"We organised the tournament at the moment when the virus has weakened, believing that the conditions for hosting the Tour had been met. Unfortunately, this virus is still present, and it is a new reality that we are still learning to cope and live with."

it's basically Ronald Reagan's speech on Iran Contra

I watched the full clip of that and it wasn’t that he was confused about transmission, but he said that tests aren’t useful for proving who is safe to be around because they might get infected in the meantime. Which is reasonable and accurate but the context is that his administration has been relying on frequent testing over actual useful measures like masks, distancing, avoiding contact under the guise that testing as sufficient to make those unnecessary. And tests aren’t useful for that, which helps feed into his tests aren’t useful at all narrative.

I have N95s I will wear those alone. I like to put a 'surgical' mask on under those cloth and nylon masks with the pouch. The surgical masks are loose and not air tight whatsoever but the other mask holds it down and is actually safe to wear on it's own. But when I try to but these surgical masks with the strings cut off in the pouch it just never works right.

:theroni:
I live in Brevard county, FL, home of Kennedy Space Center. On the county level, we have an unusually robust and well-developed emergency management department for several reasons:
1. Coastal county, so hurricanes
2. NASA
3. Patrick Air Force Base

A while back I signed up for emergency texts provided by the county. Normally they send out texts regarding fires, road closures, flooding, hurricanes, etc. They also notify us when a launch is about to happen. It's been very useful.

April 14, we started getting daily updates on the county's cases and deaths. Here's one from May 14 as an example:

quote:

Brevard EOC: Daily dashboard. There are 348 confirmed COVID19 cases and 9 deaths. Visit, https://bit.ly/3dPw6cf nixle.us/BW4ZE

May 19, they stopped texting actual numbers and started sending us a daily link to the dashboard. I am almost certain that this was because Gov. DeSantis clamped down on county coroners. Example text:

quote:

Brevard EOC: May 19 daily dashboard. For FDOH dashboard, visit https://bit.ly/3dPw6cf and https://bit.ly/2Tmh8T2 nixle.us/BWFGJ

:siren: May 28, our emergency director suddenly resigned, giving only one week's notice. :siren:

May 30, the daily covid updates stopped entirely. Not that they were very useful anymore.

June 16, I got this text:

quote:

Brevard EOC: Venturing out? The CDC gives these tips for being prepared & staying safe regarding COVID19, https://bit.ly/2YdobAx nixle.us/BYLPW

Since then they have been spamming us with this exact same text every single loving day.

We still don't have an emergency director. They're considering letting the county sheriff take over the emergency management department.

Back in March, I had a lot of confidence in my county's ability to manage this crisis. Instead I watched the entire emergency department collapse over 2 months. :waycool:

It wasn't the sport part that was the problem it was the clubbing with no shirts on, constant hugging, distance lol and allowing crowds that was the problem. There are other tennis exhibition matches going on that have been fine because they are not organised by people as dumb as Djokovic.

The good news is that while literally every pro sports league in the loving entire world is cancelling seasons over this, my school district in Florida is now allowing groups of 20 to practice and groups of 10 to loving toss balls around. See, it's dangerous if the PROS practice and play, but not the KIDS, because uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I WANT FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL!

the current plan in our district in socal for fall K-12 is alternating 2 days in class, 2 days at home, everyone home on fridays.

if youth soccer is allowed to resume, it will be in groups of no more than 9 at a time, with social distancing, no scrimmaging, all drills children must remain six feet apart, coach and assistant refs must wear masks, the most ridiculous CYAs of making it look like the thing is trying to be mitigated because no one wants to lose funding. the kids i know on club teams' parents are paying the $1500 a season it costs, for no games and backyard solo practices on Zoom

we're using 350 of 6600 ICU beds right now in our county, less than half a percent. so no one thinks it's real
