My wife is not giving said benefit.

actually this makes even more sense. Poor kiddo.

Is there any reason you couldn't make a camera based off mirrors rather than lenses, and have a collecting area 50cm across? Other than portability I mean.

This is how big telescopes work.

Well a camera is just box that holds film/sensors properly positioned behind a lens. But you can certainly make reflector lenses for cameras:

That lens is basically a Newtonian reflector telescope but with the secondary mirror parallel instead of angled, so the light goes straight out the back. It's equivalent to a 500mm telephoto lens but is much smaller and lighter because of the folded optical path.

Note that because there is a disc in the middle of the aperture (and a hole in the primary mirror), you get weird bokeh (the out of focus areas in the background) that looks like cheerios:

I spend the $5 and stick those tiny parabolic mirrors in the corners.

I had a Euro mirror on my VW that curves outward in the last 1/4 of the surface, giving it a wide angle parabola.

I haven't gotten one for the BMW (the official one is perpetually out of stock, may get a cheaper knock off?). I can see fine around the car with the current alignment, but have run into trouble with cars two lanes over. Thankfully the lane change warning system kicked in. I've had to relearn being more diligent.

This. My Subaru didn’t come with the indicator lights for blind spots like my dad’s Nissan has, but I explained to him that I’m accustomed to the sticky mirrors already and once I line them up, I can see if someone is anywhere alongside me. He agreed sticking to what I’ve built up to a reflex since I started city driving is best (he’s rural, they drive differently back home).

Vampire myth says mirrors don't show them because back in the day mirrors were made with silver. That is no longer the case and they'll show up fine.

Yep and that's why people stay away from reflex lens for photos even though they can be cheap with great focal length.

I'm holding my hopes on the metamaterial lens

https://www.nature.com/articles/srep45044

it only has 5 micrometer focal length and not necessary visible light spectrum but at least it can do ~f0.74, baby steps

Even for telescopes, refractors dominate the market for anything with less than 127 mm aperture, and for terrestrial camera use, there are even more factors in their favour.

A 600 mm f∕5.6, for example, is unquestionably refractor territory. That’s an aperture of “only” 107 mm.
