Starting to think they should cut 90% of the story from Metal Gear Solid games and just put that poo poo into a novel for people who care about that poo poo (me)

Hideo Kojima really should figure out that he can just make a movie instead of mildly interactive cutscenes.

I would actually love a MGS miniseries.

Mgs2 is one of the few games to tell a story that can only be told as a game. All of the S3 stuff (Solid Snake Simulation, not the actual S3 which was way less interesting) was absolutely brilliant and wouldn't work as a movie or a book, and I think as a narrative construct is maybe the peak of video game writing so far. Someone will likely surpass it within the next 10 years but I can't imagine a AAA title doing something that creative or risky.

I'm also super glad we have post mgs2 games in the series but none of them ever reached those heights again in terms of how they comment on the series as a whole. Like I'll replay 3, 5, and Peace Walker more times than I'll revisit 2, but 2 is an absolute masterpiece and if the series had ended there it would be remembered as each game being a huge leap forward in terms of the stories you can tell in a game.

there's great stories that fit the medium (NieR Automata, Spec Ops, MGS, apparently Death Stranding and The Witcher) but anything that's positioned as "CINEMATIC" is dubious.

Adding story to video games is cool and good when done well, which rarely ever happens but when it does it's great. I don't mind there being a million bad games so long as there are a few good ones getting made

Having replayed MGS1 a year and a half ago, what really stands out is the camera angles. Comparing how each moment of that game looks compared to Spyro the Dragon or Ocarina of Time really shows that it outshone its contemporaries in what you could do with camera angles alone.

But yeah cinematic as a buzzword has really been poison for the medium since around 2003 or whenever it started being applied frequently

i think zeropunctuation is pretty annoying but he did have one very good point that i always remembered: the original demons in doom have very distinct facial expressions that tell you something about them on sight (the baron of hell is arrogant, the cacodemon is gluttonous, the imp is pissed etc) which were replaced with generic evil horn faces in the later game, that's how a videogame story should work, just little visual or unconscious cues that don't interrupt the gameplay.

it's also why duke nukem 3d rules, it does have a story: gross perverted aliens have invaded earth and are stealing all of the babes and duke has to kill them to save the babes, it never even really spells this out anywhere ingame, but it still works as a story and it's immediately motivating you to start playing

Duke 3d has exactly the correct amount of story. you see a spaceship blow up, duke says "drat those aliens are going to PAY for busting up my ride!" and he loads a gun. a moment later you are making some aliens pay for busting up your ride.

This isn't an opinion on it either but it's kind of funny in a jarring way to me how TLOU is this story about loss and suffering, and people doing morally grey things in an amoral world where survival is number 1 and all of the damage it causes, and cycles of violence and people trying to break that cycle, and all of these other high brow themes where the characters have to bear the weight of the violence they commit. Then in the game parts you just indiscriminately murder 100s of nameless people.

I do like in Metal Gear Rising that the antagonists try to pull that on Raiden and it works for a little bit but then he eventually responds by going 'It's time for Jack... to let 'er RIP!' :unsmigghh: And that unlocks sicko mode for the rest of the game

What did you say the strategy was?
Call of duty should sell the single player campaigns for cheap separately.

I've never played call of duty online, but I used to like the single player campaigns. Cod 2 had a great one outside of the brigade box and the top of the hill bunker mission, mw is a classic, mw2 was fun. Ghosts kind of sucked but I got it for free and traded it in for store credit immediately after I finished it. I think I played blops and it was ok.

This is kind of why I forgot about the "shocking part that will question your thoughts about war" of Modern Warfare where you play as a child who has to fight their way in a warzone. It was just goofier than I imagine they intended because it was an FPS where the camera was at knee level and I couldn't get over that one detail. I felt like a murderous dwarf.. Games that try to be all morally ambiguous miss the mark like bad drama movies tend to do.

What I'm trying to say is that I liked Call of Duty when you did over-the-top cinematic poo poo like drive pick-up trucks through the London Underground like a bad 24 episode.

I can't really understand how people have fetishes for Super Mario Bro's characters and everyone wants to gently caress Sonic the Hedgehog, especially now there's a new movie about him just released, when the best side scroller at the time was Turrican 2 by a country mile. Why is no one trying to gently caress a chibi star-made-of-blades-that-rolls-around-dropping-bombs? Or drawing a weirdly infantalised shadow-giant-whos-hand-you-can-stand-on? Where's all the cyber-piranha porn wait don't actually answer that one I bet there's loads.

Anyway the point isn't the porn, just that Turrican 2 was better than those shite games but no one ever talks about it and it seems like everyone loves those other games so much they literally want to gently caress them. It's probably more comparable to Metroid, I guess. WHICH IT ALSO SHITS ON.

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion, per se, but - as much as I greatly, GREATLY enjoyed "Hollow Knight," I don't feel the need to actually beat it. It doesn't help that I'm apparently just simply not good enough to beat Radiance, but I kind of feel like I've gotten all the enjoyment out of it that I can. Also I spoiled the ending for myself on youtube and yeah, pretty simple, brief ending, as expected.

Yes, I managed to beat the Colosseum of Fools, no, I didn't manage to beat Nightmare King Grimm.

the battle system is pretty basic but the menu system is...

Basically you Equip Spells instead of armor, weapons, and accessories. The waifus you have equipped determine which stats you're permitted to equip spells to, and you usually have to manually select abilities called Str-J or Spd-J to learn and master in order to unlock the equipment slots. It's literally that simple.

the game is extremely incapable of explaining this to you.
