I had that exact phrase used against me on FB. Do they go to Terf school to learn it? (All I did was share that science article someone shared a couple of weeks ago about intersex/gender identity etcon a post someone made supporting JKR. Also had someone literally say she knew better because she had an MSc in biology. I did post (and immediately delete) a reply saying "I see your MSc and raise you one PhD" (though as my PhD is in a 'hard science' unconnected with biology except possibly at the more esoteric end, it probably wasn't relevant.) The woman who had written the article also had an MSc in biology - so who is to say which MSc in biology was trumps?

I registered in I think 04 (possibly 05) and mostly lurked until. BYOB came around when I was 17 or so. I then migrated to LF to complete my radicalisation from the centre left until I got banned by someone *cough*Cefte posted:I've pretty much lurked the last ten years but I'll still miss it. Freecycle died off as yahoo groups died away - facebook just isn't the right medium for it with posts jumping all over the place as someone presses 'like' or makes a comment. of course, there's mumsnet, netmums, gransnet....

Over the last decade+ I've made some bad posts and some good friends. Thanks to this place for turning me from a dumb babby idiot who voted Lib Dem in 2010 into the jaded Corbynista outrider leftist I am today. In conclusion, UKMT is a land of contrasts and I hope it doesn't die.

mudskipp posted:Are there many active non specialist forums about on the internet or are they all dying off? I much prefer the format but only lurk here & one other place which seems to have dwindled to a handful of regulars Digital Spy is still around, and although the main focus is TV shows it does have reasonably active general discussion and politics subforums, at least it did the last time I checked. The politics forum does skew very heavily centrist/Lib Dem and the quality of posting isn't particularly great, especially compared to this thread. It is also pretty much unreadable around election times. The general forum is mostly just things like "name a band beginning with the last letter of the band the previous poster mentioned", so make of that what you will. As Jaeluni said, the traditional forums do seem to have been dying off in the face of social media. Although Facebook isn't great for these kinds of discussions, especially when I have to use my real name, and Twitter is even worse. Hopefully Discord can prove a viable alternative if it comes to that.

I've been lurking on SA from Ireland for 15 years, and earlier iterations of this thread back in the LF days turned me into a socialist. I'm 42 years old, I don't do social media and can't keep up with the likes of Discord, so these worthless dead forums are my internet home. I almost never post because by the time I've thought of something worthwhile or interesting to say someone else has usually said it far better than I ever could, but if lowtax nukes the forums I'll really miss the posters here.

I mostly lurk on the forums - but like everyone else, this thread in particular has been a great help. It's taught me a lot about politics (aka radicalised me to the commie cause), a whole bunch of other cool stuff, made me a better person and just been really fun. I registered originally to follow Let's Plays and didn't venture outside of that subforum for years. Even though there's whole chunks of the forums I never really looked at, the places I did venture to have been great. And if you're lurking and unsure, join the UKMT discord - we don't know what will happen next, but it's the best place to follow. We could jump ship to theforum365.com which was recently set up as a lifeboat for the football365.com forum which has been dying for years. Their Labour thread is embarrassing and it would be nice to have more comrades fighting the good fight against the tide of Sensible Centrists.

I registered to reread an old LP. The one where the thread read those old Mario Nintendo Adventure books. Most of the images in that LP are broken now. Though I mostly lurked this thread, it's done a great deal to inform me about politics in general. And whether this thread is the last one, or these forums limp on into the future, I just wanted to say thanks, thread.

Mid/late 90s was IRC/MUD, newsgroups (mostly reading not posting), group emails, and a lot of passive consumption of websites, 00s was forums (science and eng ones mostly), IRC, MSN messenger, and a lot of sharing of pdfs, 10s was this place and facebook. It does seem to divide quite neatly, with youtube coming in too but never read the comments. I hope the 20s still has something like this place for effortposts and reading at a steady pace, I agree that discord is more like hopping into a conversation than reading an article. Jaeluni Asjil posted:Weren't there also a couple of cases where circumcision of baby boys went wrong and they were brought up female but it caused them severe mental issues later in life? All of which further undermines the terf claim about weaponizing intersex (which I assume comes from them all following each other to better ignore science, like OwlFancier said. All kids would be better off in life if surgeons left their genitals alone at birth, and intersex kids would grow up happier and healthier if the surgeons didn't 'correct' and if society didn't consider them 'weird'.

just walked past literally dozens of groups of more than six people not socially distancing whatsoever on the beach, if you think that telling people not to do stupid poo poo will lead to them not doing stupid poo poo you're a loving moron (CMO, I am looking at you). we are absolutely headed for a second wave, it's like a fire, a force of nature where if all the necessary preconditions are in place then it will catch eventually and you are just a wishful thinker if you believe it will be ok because ~reasons~
