Lurking can be good. I basically lurk on Twitter. It's nice to just listen and digest - and like OwlFancier, I enjoy re-explaining it to people in my head until it makes sense and I can express it concisely. I've done this since I was a child. The problem comes when you do it back to marginalised people, then you become a "reply guy". However, posting is good too. It lets the boo-hoos out. E: Here's some posting: I'm sure something like this has been a thing throughout history, but it feels like there was a particular kind of turning point in the formative years of [average age of this thread]-year olds. We have a lot of former loud angry internet atheists, who have now evolved (in my case) into quiet mildly peeved atheists. And several 2010 Lib Dem voters (including me) who have evolved into thinking Corbyn was a good start, at best. We are either good people, or lucky with the internet communities we ended up in (or a bit of both). I still shudder looking back at the trousers of time when I was a frustrated horny teenager - did I process that as "well of course nobody would have sex with me, I'm ugly and weird, it's all my fault" instead of "loving stuck up bitches" because I'm a good person, or because I wasn't exposed to incel poo poo at the key moment? Another long time lurker chiming in. SA has by far been a definitive part of my adolescence and adulthood - I came into the UKMT quite a bit later on (D&D always scared me as a place for Serious Posts) but I've been truly glad and grateful that I've followed it for the last several years. I'm definitely someone who cold have otherwise ended up landing into the comfortable numbness of centrism - thanks UKMT for having given me so much perspective and appreciation for a more compassionate outlook.

I don't post a lot here but it's been a great place to lurk and learn stuff. I've got a lot of fond memories of SA. I've learned a lot here especially in the UKMTs and I'm much less of a shithead idiot than I was when I registered. I've joined the discord and that breadnroses forum linked earlier so hopefully some of the good stuff will carry over onto those. Going to give it a bit longer and see what happens but I can't see lowtax giving up the forums and I'm not going to stay on a site run by an abuser. I just watched that facebook video posted in the GBS thread and it is deeply uncomfortable to watch. I'm not going to link it but it was posted without much content warning so I will say very strongly that anybody with a history of abuse should avoid watching it. Count me as another person who's very grateful for this thread, even if I've only posted in it a handful a times. I've been here for years and my whole somethingawful experience can be summarised by that one KC Green comic about eternal lurking. I did post in a webcomic thread and got given this avatar of sentient penis people, so that's something I guess. There's something special about forums (especially moderated forums) that helps to foster discussion. Also lurking in Discord just feels a bit creepy.
