I joined in 2011 so I could read the LP forum.

I had general 'labour good, tony blair good' political opininons back then but reading UKMT turned me into a gay communist.

Will miss this place if it goes, I always preferred the forum format. I think I joined the discord the last time we thought the site was going down forever.

I'm saying providing people outside the UKMT a potential method to access the legit good content would be cool and if it brings in a few quid too that's no sin.

Take up your rifles
When I was about eight, someone told me what communism was, that it was based on the idea that everyone should have the same things and everybody should share everything equally. So I said to my mum "I think I'm a communist". As I grew up, I grew wiser, left those old beliefs behind. First I became a libertarian, then I mellowed out to your average leftish liberal. Things needed to get better, but like, not in a socialist way, none of that works in practice. No, the right way to do things is small changes, and representational government. And sure Labour had policies I generally agreed with, but they were stuck in the past, and they had the taint of Iraq still on them. My first ever general election, I put an x in the box for the Nick Clegg's Lib Dems.

Two weeks later, and gradually I was coming to terms with the fact that eight year old me was apparently a lot loving smarter than I was. That was the catalyst that pierced my bubble of smug self-assuredness, and got me to read The Shock Doctrine, which my mum had been pestering me to read for months. After that, I knew I needed to learn more, so I came to the UKMT for the first time, and all of y'all gladly provided me with the means to brainwash myself. I'm very grateful for that because otherwise I might have slipped back into that wishy washy liberalism over time.

That said, if this is the end, I'm going to take this opportunity to finally say something I've dared not say ever since those early days: The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists was boring as poo poo. There, I said it.

Resenting the situation or being bored by the work broadly isn't the same as resenting and losing interest in the particular specific thing that is giving you the money you need to not die. If doing a late shift at the soul-destroying call centre is the difference between making rent in two days or not no-one is resenting that extra shift and they don't find the concept of that extra shift boring either it's acutely interesting because it's their human needs being met or not.

The experience of living on low-paid work is boring and breeds resentment but the actual material act is something you set an alarm to show up to do and every day you prioritise doing it over every other element of your life.

The 'once I get paid I've been sullied by the dollar and my interest fllits elsewhere' idea is scummy as gently caress congrats on being rich enough that you can divide your labour not by survival but by whim.

I think you've misunderstood. The point isn't that you get paid for something and it makes you feel icky so you don't ever accept money for it again, the point is that you continue to do it but it no longer holds joy for you.

the first and last time i tried to read this book, i had just moved back home after university and massively depressed, and got the traditional Bad Idea that many people with depression get, which is: "well now I have all this free time, what with not being able to do anything productive due to my brain shutting down, I can read a bunch of large novels, this is definitely something that my brain is capable of and that will help me get through this"

children, there are many good pieces of media to get your through hard times (i eventually settled on Terry Pratchett books and Jeff Smith's collected Bone) but a detailed account of the hardships of the working classes in the 1910s is not one I would recommend. might give it another shot one of these days

Well, crap. If this is the end of the forums, it's been a blast. I joined in 2007, and lurked in LF for a while, becoming radically left over time. I then shifted over to lurk in here, and it's been great. Wish I could rescind my $10 I gave to Lowtax for the platinum, but oh well.

Merci, chaton!
I credit the UKMT for moving me from vaguely-left centrist to demsoc progressive, purely from seeing on a daily basis just how truly loving horrible the Tories, New Labour and libs in general are. (Discovering what the Orange Bookers really stood for was an eye-opener, after which my attitude became "gently caress the Lib Dems".) I've also turned full anti-imperialist from a position of not really thinking about it, so there's that too.

Being an old fart, I don't really get what Discord is all about - it's basically just a fancy chatroom, right? I'll have to check out breadnroses, though. I prefer the static, easy-reading nature of forums over anything that pushes content at me. Hopefully Lowtax will decide to go rather than nuking the site from orbit.
