Wholeheartedly recommend it if you like anything about the look of it. It's got a whole campaign mode with a strategic layer like mount and blade too.

Sorry, I would take this to PMs if you had them, but just wanted to say thanks for recommending this!

It's sucked up the last few days and I now have my own little colony :) It's like a more fleshed out version of https://endless-sky.github.io/ (which is open source and also on Steam for free) which I also enjoyed.

Functionally this is what is paying for its comparatively better HDIs. There is some similarity to Cold War Cuba here, where Cuba received even more generous subsidies in return for ideological alignment in a strategic location.

in terms of contributing to the Keralese model, the best thing to do would to be work in a relatively much richer country (cough the UK cough) and remit most of your salary to someone else in Kerala

corbyn was too slow, he should have made the racists in the old disciplinary team stop being racist saboteurs forging 90% of complaints to leak Big Number to the press much faster than he did so ken could be dealt with on time, which everyone involved definitely wanted to happen and they are not at all on record as having deliberately broken the system to make the left look bad

The labour gen sec at the time (Ian something or other) intentionally sat on the issue and didn't allow any action to be taken against him, to make corbyn look bad even when told to do so by corbyn. This all came out in one of leaks in... 2018 i think? So yes, as part of internal sabotage to make corbyn look bad.

The issue with Corbyn is he was a poo poo leader. He was scared of a fight. He had a lot of potential power & a lot of *ahem* momentum & support from the membership & he could've cleaned house right out the gates. Instead he kept trying to compromise with people who made it clear from before he had even been confirmed as leader that they were going to be wreckers. By the time he'd accepted reality a lot of the enthusiasm had wilted away as people got ready to accept they were going to have to waste energy on endless internal battles. I get it's not in his nature but loving hell it was such a wasted opportunity. Probably the best chance of my lifetime and just pissed against the wall.

the wealth is comparatively easy to redistribute as very little of it is made in Kerala, but instead in dramatically richer countries

(which themselves are rich due to oil)

the fact that the oil is not in Kerala itself discourages a Niger delta resource curse, where oil fuels ethnic conflict instead of relative prosperity (compared to other countries at a similar level of development). But there is still social disruption of sending a huge swathe of the country overseas to work for remittances. Fundamentally it's 1) not very leftie to embrace selling labour on a national scale as a model 2) not very leftie given the conditions Kerala implicitly tolerates for that labour force 3) not perhaps scalable

One of the allegations in the leaked report was that the staff deliberately slowed action on Livingstone down to hurt Corbyn.

Yes. That is in there. Corbyn wanted to move swiftly.

Leaked report p307 of report (309 of PDF)

quote:

When Ken Livingstone repeated his offensive comments immediately after his NCC hearing in April 2017, Jeremy Corbyn publicly said that an investigation should be launched into those new comments, and he spoke to Jeremy Newmark, then Chair of JLM, who said:

When I spoke to Jeremy Corbyn on Wednesday afternoon he told me that new complaints based upon Mr Livingstone’s comments and actions subsequent to 7.45pm on Tuesday evening when the verdict became public would be taken forward by the NEC.

Newmark sought assurances from Iain McNicol that this was in hand. McNicol said “I can assure you that your complaint about Mr Livingstone is being investigated… staff are currently working on compiling the numerous strands of evidence, including a significant number of witness statements”. However, emails reveal this was not true. No investigation was launched until ten months after Ken Livingstone made the comments, despite LOTO repeatedly chasing for updates and asking why the investigation Corbyn called for hadn’t been launched.
Stolliday finally confirmed in early 2018 that no investigation had been launched, saying “I anticipate [Livingstone] will be back in membership in April”, even though he admitted that staff and the General Secretary had the power to launch an investigation and to suspend Ken Livingstone at any time of their choosing.

The reasons GLU cited for the delays on this case do not explain why it took ten months and chasing from LOTO to launch the investigation - which ultimately involved writing two sentences - or why JLM was misinformed about the investigation having been launched earlier. Seumas Milne asked in February 2018: “Emilie, in our discussions about the KL saga I never quite got why the second investigation was never started”.
